Kenzo Soba

Apparently, this is one of the best places for 'soba' - buckwheat noodles in Fukui Prefecture. Many TV personalities seem to think so, too - as their autographs are plastered on the walls everywhere. We went by car and they offer free parking ... so, I don't know how hard it would be to get to here, without a car. It's in the middle of a small residential area and not so hard to find, if you can read Japanese ... although it doesn't look like a restaurant from the outside - just a typical Japanese house. The menu we were given was only in Japanese (don't think they had one in English), however the choices are extremely limited. Two sizes of noodle servings: regular or big and two styles of noodles: "Oroshi-soba" (with grated 'daikon' = Japanese horseradish soup-stock-sauce) topped with "katsuo-bushi" (bonito flake) and "negi" (chopped chives) ... or "Kenzosoba" with a spicy-hot 'daikon oroshi' soup-stock-sauce (naturally, this seems to be their specialty). They don't offer any other style of dishes ...However, they do have a soba soft ice-cream which was unusually yummy (highly recommend as something different) and a "purin" = an egg custard pudding - but, we didn't try it - as we were too full after all of the noodles we ate.If you're looking for a unique buckwheat noodle experience and simply love buckwheat noodles - then, this is a must-try place.Mondays are holidays ... or Tuesdays after a public holiday on Mondays.

One of the many seafood stalls along the path to Tojimbo cliffs, perhaps the biggest, with a large restaurant area when you get past the outside stall. Apparently famous or popular with Japanese celebrities, according to all the photos up on the wall. Lots of seafood, sashimi, crab, etc. Had a set of sashimi, a bit pricey but good quality. Has beer and soft drinks, also.

While sauce katsudon is their main dish, their set menu is also very good. For example, you can get a plate that includes pork cutlet (sauce katsu), Japanese hamburger, fried egg, spaghetti, salad and rice for around 1000 yen. For the amount of food and variety, as well good quality, it is good value.Service was better than previous visit; staff attentive and often come to refill water.Recommended for trying a local specialty if you're visiting or just passing through Fukui.

"Sauce katsudon" is a local Fukui dish, similar to usual Katsudon in Japan, except rather than egg on pork cutlet, they use worcestershire sauce. Definately worth eating if you're in the area, and Yoroppaken (or Europe-ken) is one of the best places to go.As for this restaurant, the service was quick and courteous. The branch at Owada kept us waiting a long time, but here they took orders quickly and our food arrived within a couple of minutes. They refilled our water many times, even after we had finished eating and were just chatting. They were very busy, but we didn't feel pressured by them to leave. It is not a fancy restaurant by any means, but clean and comfortable.

Sauce katsudon is a fried pork cutlet with a sweet, Japanese-style worcestershire sauce over rice. Yoroppa-ken is more famous because of its history, but I feel that the sauce katsudon here is much better. The sauce is more flavorful & the meat is big, juicy & has a thin layer of fat. It can get crowded here & lines form on weekends, so make sure to come early.
