Driving deep past the fields in Ozu-machi we arrived at what seemed to be a small farm house and barn surrounded by a bamboo forest. Before even entering I was surprised at the traditional architecture of the house, with incredible low-style front door, so much so I had to bend down to get inside. We then sat down on our zabutons and waited for the food to arrive. The interior of the place is pretty much the same as it would have been a hundred years ago, with the old style bathroom, kitchen and tea area all kept intact. The food arrived not too long after we arrived and what a feast it was! We could choose between a hearty dago-jiru or regular miso, I went with the dago-jiru and was not disappointed, a decent portion of vegetables beautifully cooked with a vegetable broth. Alongside this were several types of Tofu, which according to my Japanese friends were of extremely high quality, and authentically made in accordance with traditional methods unlike most modern tofu. Would strongly recommend anyone in the area with a car to make their way here as it is very difficult to access. Search the restaurant name in Japanese or use: 1047 HirakawaÅzu-machi, Kikuchi-gun, Kumamoto-ken 869-1231Japan,This is exactly where the restaurant is located. They seem to be open for lunch and dinner, however dinner is only on a reservation basis, they also appear to have Wednesdays off. They also have a facebook page in Japanese for more information.

This is a third times to visit here when I stay in Candeo hotel. Hotel has coupon for this restaurant, you can get 10% discount. Tonkatsu is very soft and delicious. You have free refills on rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables and cabbage. Restaurant staff is very kind.
