Oshokujidokoro Kaihami

Reviewed By BadgerCT

One of the best meals we had in Japan, and in a slightly obscure gift-shop-cum-lunch room 100m walk up from the main falls car park! Tables at the window overlook the falls and beautiful green valley below. The food was excellent, freshly prepared and very reasonably priced. Most of the crowds don’t wander further than the cluster of restaurants around the falls or below the temple; their loss!

Ogawa

We returned from a long morning of sight seeing. All the restaurants we passed on the way back to our hotel from the station were closed. Then we came upon Ogawa. It was just before 2PM (14:00) and they were just about to close. The lovely proprietress, who was putting out the “closed” sign, invited us in for lunch. We had the place to ourselves, but we could hear the staff eating lunch somewhere in the area near the back kitchen. We weren’t sure if the woman who welcomed us and the man who did the cooking were a family but it seemed possible. They enjoyed talking with us, though we don’t speak Japanese and they had very little English. There was no English menu so we took the proprietress outdoors and pointed to something in the plastic food display. We thought to have tuna steaks but we had had them for dinner the day before and were planning on that again tonight, so we selected shrimp tempura with vegetables. It was excellent. The place is smallish with counter seating, 4 low table seating areas where we sat, and one banquet room.We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the food and recommend this restaurant highly.

Nachi

After visiting the fish markets, some people did not feel like sashimi. But this restaurant catered well for all tastes and I enjoyed a wonderful raw fatty tuna and plum sauce with rice while others preferred a great looking smoked salmon salad. We coped very well in English language.

bodai

Reviewed By Jeera_Genie

Bodai is just across the road from Kii-Katsuura train station. It specialises in fresh seafood (particularly sea urchin and tuna) and umeshu plum wine. It's got a real name for itself in Japan. When we were there the other guests were Japanese and they'd obviously travelled from out of town to eat at Bodai. We had tuna-katsu (really unusual - have never seen this on a menu before!) set lunch and umeshu as it's a specialty of the Wakayama area and Bodai has a huge range of the local plum wines. Great spot for a tasty lunch and ideal way to try some local specialties that you are unlikely to see in the tourist hot spots of Tokyo and Kyoto.

Takeharamaguroten

This restaurant was recommended by the Tourism Office near the train station. It's a wonderful "hole-in-the-wall" that unless you read Japanese you would likely walk past it.No English menu. Just order the Tuna Set for Y1600 and enjoy a wonderful meal with salad, soup, rice, and three cuts of tuna, plus tea. We sat at the counter and watched the chef slicing tuna. He is a master of his craft and a very gregarious man. "Oishi-desu" indeed! Two women helping him are from Thailand and Philippines and very friendly and somewhat helpful for English-speakers.Open daily 11a-2p and 5p-9p. Go!So glad we came here and certainly one of the best tuna sashimi meals I've ever had!

We decided to try this place for lunch and we were spot on.Set meals ( main course, soup, rice, appetisers) were averaging between 1100y to 1600y depending on what you order - there were fresh tuna fish, fresh mix fish, mixed tempura, fried chicken, and eel set. Lunch opens at 11.30am and closes about 1.30pm - restaurant gets crowded very fast with only about 20 seats.Chef speaks English though no English menu.

We decided we had to visit a tuna restaurant before leaving Nachikatsuura. Katsuragi came highly recommended. We couldn't understand anything from the Japanese menu so they gave a simplified English menu. We picked a luxury set menu plus a tuna cutlet with rice, then added a roasted tuna chin. Everything was delicious. The price was also very reasonble.

... they seem to be one of the few restaurants that don't maintain ridiculously limiting business hours; many places are not open early or close between lunch and dinner, and almost all close immediately following dinner (5-530-6pm), this restaurant is open from 11am until 9pm.Also, the food is really good. Steakhouse Hinoki

Reviewed By explrdvr37

It's a bit of an OTT accolade to say that we had the best meal in Japan at what looks almost like a dive bar in the small port town of NachiKatsuura - there certainly was a lot of competition between Steakhouse Hinoki, Kyoto and later for us, Osaka.Perhaps it was the sheer exhilaration of completing the Kumano Kodo or the horrendous buffet-style feeding frenzy we'd experienced at our hotel at Urashima the night before, but an intimate dinner with no more than 9 other customers was just heavenly. We're not normally wagyu fans, preferring our beef grass-fed, but the 2 steaks we had were melt-in-the-mouth perfection. We also did a side order of seafood and that was amazing as well. The chef (who spoke very good English) focussed his attention on the 2 hot plates on either side of him and calmly cooked everything to order. He's not fussed about getting as many customers as he can in an evening either - 2 other Japanese customers came in a bit later, but he told them he was full and done for the night and sent them on their way. So come early - he only does 1 seating per night and was already cleaning up by the time we were finished. We only stumbled across this place on our way from the train station to the harbour, but count our blessings that it turned out to be the best place to eat in this town.
