A wonderful warm, welcome! We stopped in here after walking to see the nearby waterfalls and when we stopped by the church only to find the church closed. As we had been planning to be out all day we had eaten our packed-lunches when we arrived at the bar around lunchtime and so couldn't possibly have a meal, so we ordered a beer and sat in a quiet area for a while. The proprietor spoke good English and chatted to us about the area, making us feel very welcome! He gave us a snack as a 'present' - perhaps he didn't like to see someone without food at lunchtime it was a wonderful local bread and ham made locally, with the use of the oils common further south where the bread is prepared made very thin and then I think fried in the animal fat. It was delicious and I don't think I'm describing it well.We stayed for a while, talking about the local area foods and traditions before we had to go one.The food available here looked amazing and would definitely be worth stopping by for They also had a wide array of local foods such as organic jam available and some home made things - like the alcohol and berry mixture I don't recall the name of.Definitely worth a trip here - and if going to the church or passing the waterfalls worth planning to stay to eat.

While driving the "back roads" in the mountains we came upon this wonderful spot quite by accident. When we entered the restaurant (around 3:00 pm) it was quite evident that we were between meal periods. We opted for some wine and beer on the outdoor patio overlooking the mountains and valleys. I discovered that they had a small grocery store and had the proprietor slice us some fresh meat, some cheese and breads. We enjoyed this platter of food on the patio. It was very inexpensive and served the four of us quite well for a mid-afternoon snack before continuing on our way. We had some communication issues - but the intent was met. Hospitality was great.

Fantastic kitchen for typical dishes from the region. The daily menu consists of 6 courses, plus a liquor of choice at the end. The owners are very friendly and the heart they put in their work comes back in every aspect of this restaurant and its food.

We expected the room to be "basic" so were really pleased to find a balcony with lovely view, compact bathroom with plentiful hot water, powerful shower and a window, and a smallish room but comfortable bed and everything bright white and spotlessly clean. We walked here from Lizzano and collapsed into the bar for arianciata amara and a chat with our host, Marco. He was a dab hand with cocktails and our dinner included an aperitif of prosecco with strawberry one night and a powerful mix of cinzano, white wine and gin the next evening and ended with a homemade limoncello crema (made by his mother in law) or another Marco special. In between we had three courses of proper Italian food with masses of vegetables and salad on a side table, all cooked by his wife Irena. They run the hotel now with Irena's mother. All pasta and bread is homemade and our meals included roast pork with prunes and chestnuts, oven cooked wild boar (both excellent), lasagne, mixed green veg in a cream sauce (double helping it was so good), asparagus with bechamel sauce and home ade icecream with caramel. The rolls in the picnic lunch were delicious brown wholemeal. I think we can say ALL the food was really good! Wonderful walking around here and we'd happily have stayed longer even if the room was a wee bit small.

What a luck that we found this special restaurant. Fresh and authentic regional food was what we got and an extremely friendly service. We ate until food coma and i assume there is no other way to eat in this restaurant. Do not expect any luxury though. The menu is being told except handing out cards- there is only one red or white wine and water, no other drink options. But the food is heaven- truffels are extremly fresh.

We were recommended by the staff at Montepizzo (great call). Although early, there were a few people in the front area which soon filled up which was a good sign. What we did not realise was that the back section was already taken. We were visiting off season as this is a ski resort so found it surprising until the food started to arrive. I had a steak along with potatoes as a main dish (Gluten free) and watched as my friends devoured local dishes (pasta and bread). The end of the meal was celebrated with grappa. The owner is very proud of his very large selection which we had to try.....and rank for flavour.Great food, wine, grappa and staff in a warm environment

Albergo Ristorante Monte Piella

This restaurant in Castelluccio in the hills about Porretta Terme served me some of the best meals I ate in Italia. Maybe it was because Salvatore and Daniela feature the traditional Apennine-Emiliano dishes that you may not find elsewhere; or maybe it is the fact that everything they serve made with local grains, produce and meats; or maybe it is because they make you feel like you are eating in their home. Whatever, this is an eating experience you should not miss. In the five days I spent there I had wild boar (cinghiale), rabbit (coniglo), pork roast (porchetta) and several types of local salami, sausage and mortadella. The pastas were every bit as delicious: tagliatelle bolognese, tortalloni (filled with local ricotta) with butter and salvia), stascinati (you may not find this on other menus). It got to the point I could not choose from all they offered, so I told them to decide for me and they never delighted with A surprise everytime. Their dolci are unrivaled: a fig torte, chestnut torte, strawberry torte, a dark chocolate cake that was fabulous. Just when you think you are done they will bring out homemade limoncello and other traditional "digestivi". Take a detour from the tourist trail and see the Real Italia. They operate a 10 room pensione above the restaurant and the town offers a slice or Italia that few people will see; and those how do will not forget the experience. If you like hiking/trekking the chestnut and beech forests above the town provide plenty of options for excursions in the fresh mountain air where you will find cool spring sprouting out everywhere (yes it is safe to drink). In season you will find several varieties of mushrooms everywhere and chestnuts by the basket full. The rooms may not be the best you will find in Italia but you will find that most of your time will be spent in the dining area and strolling about.Beyond the food and beautiful surroundings I found that the people of Castelluccio, especially Daniela and Salvatore, to be the friendliest I met in my six weeks of travel. Don't miss this place!
