We stopped at their Quay location in a first floor suite. The room was first class and comfortable. The breakfasts were very good with lots of choice each day. Most of the staff were really helpful. Compared with last year we thought the dinner menu was not quite as good with a lack of specials especially fish. Room prices have now increased but we still thought it was good value and well located in Book Festival week.Thank you for taking the time to leave us a great review Dave, I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay in one of our fantastic Quay suites. Although our menu is slightly smaller we still aim to offer food of a high standard, using quality locally sourced ingredients and suppliers. Please visit our website to view our 'winter breaks' deal available from Oct 28th-March 31st.We hope to see you again,Kind regardsChelsea

We were in Barnstaple for a couple of days and wanted somewhere nice to eat, and preferably an independent establishment. We came across Clayton and the Glasshouse of a side street. We were quite late for lunch but impressed with the choices which included several fish options and a ‘chefs choice’. The food was really tasty and served with a nice selection of well cooked veg. The wine we ordered was lovely. Service was great, nice friendly staff who offered to show us the amazing roof terrace, lots of glass, a covered and open area, we will go back just to eat upstairs! All in all we really enjoyed this place and so happy to find somewhere that wasn’t your same old chain food!Thank you for your review! I am lucky enough to live in Appledore and visit the Royal George weekly. Everyday their menu changes, (they only serve free range or organic locally sourced meat. I can’t think of another place nearby that does that). The staff are always friendly, the decor is Nice and the view is breathtaking. The latest menu is the best yet. I am so pleased that I only have to walk five minutes to enjoy their food. On this occasion I invited my parents and my friends for a birthday lunch. We had to preorder which was easy to do. We arrived a bit early and the staff allowed us to bring a cake, balloons and table decorations. We enjoyed some drinks until the food arrived. All of it was perfect, my friends and family were very happy and I had a very relaxed birthday party. I could not recommend this venue enough. Thanks very much to the staff at the Royal George!

Bit of a locals pub, Had to order my pint over a very large German Shepherd which took up most of the dark bar. Didn’t stay for a 2nd pint or come back for a meal.

Nothing above average here; the menu reads well but the dishes don't really live up to their description. I had a lovely piece of fish served a very over-powering "cassoulet" not a bean in sight! Even in a country pub, does the landlord really need to sit in his shorts eating his dinner on the patron's side of the bar when the service was lacking. Shame 'cos it's a great location and in the word of the ol' school teacher, could do better!
