An internet search for a local restaurant for breakfast in Paarl turned up the Moutainside Restaurant at Ruitersvlei...best decision we made all week! We had previously driven past on our way to The Spice Route without even noticing it, more the pity. We were the only ones in the dining room when we arrived and their charming staff bent over backwards for us. It was a freezing morning so a fire was lit and we were given a view looking out over beautifully manicured lawns with mountains in the background...perfect! We were starving so chose the biggest breakfast on offer...an excellent choice; generous to a fault it included fried eggs, bacon, tomato, lamb sausage (note to self...find out the name of the Butcher!), large brown mushrooms, home made bread with butter and jam. We washed this down with copious amounts of cuppacino...couldn't fault a thing. Charming (yes, I'm repeating myself) and attentive staff...who went to the trouble to take us on a tour of their newly renovated rooms in the accommodation wing as well as their large functions hall, perfect for weddings and conferences. If we had've know that accommodation was also offered at Ruitersvlei (with breakfast of your choice thrown in) and at the competitive rates on offer...we would've booked in there and then! Beautifully decorated rooms with rates to suit all budgets. Dinner is also on offer, booking necessary. Adjoining the dining-room is a wine tasting area...although we didn't taste their wines, if the 'nose' of their merlot is anything to go by...superb...delicious! Our experience here, albeit short, got our day off to the perfect start and it was the perfect ending to our week of work in The Cape.

Never again! My daughter visited with 2 friends. She got very sick in the restaurant after eating prawns and started vomiting before she could make it to the bathroom. She was handed tissues to clean the table and the floor. The 'cleaner/waitress' put on gloves and came to collect the dirty tissues from my daughter. When I asked the waitress what she ordered, I was immediately told in a very arrogant manner that there was nothing wrong with the food or the milkshake, since everything they serve is fresh. I never questioned whether the food was fresh, I only asked what my daughter ordered. To top it all, I was charged for the bill.As a manager in the hospitality field I find this appalling. Never will I visit them again, or refer any of my guests to visit.

We've had numerous Lunches and Dinners at Faber since Avondale 'gave birth' to this new venture. Chef Dale Stevens, has undeniably dethroned his predecessor. What a dynamic change - the food is beyond delectable - it's honest, simple and hugely flavoursome, with presentation that looks like original artworks. Very..........yes, very few Chefs in the Cape Winelands and Cape Town can knock you out with the way they do meat and fish - Chef Dale Stevens' touch will send anyone to heaven and back.........for more! Well done - the Restaurant has actually gotten a very welcoming atmosphere, with Kat, who is ever-so-divine and her Team of polite, smiling, efficient and professional waiters. The new Dessert on the Menu - Wow! they've transformed the 'suburban guava' with its 'crème fraiche ice-cream', into an orgasmic experience. Faber should be a must on everyone's bucket list. Oh,Yes! Not usually a wine-drinker - I delighted greatly in Avondale's new Limited Edition Qvevri - perfectly indulgent! Hopefully, next Season we'll see some Interior Refurbs and Artworks that will 'Pop' and transform Faber into more of a "Destination Experience'. Had an enjoyable lunch with the great service of Leticia and owner Olivier. Leticiaâs friendliness coupled with Olivierâs attentiveness to details really made our lunch taste even better. We ordered the Duo of Tuna, Brandy Bisque Soup, Prawn Risotto and Spicy seafood spaghetti. Everything was delicious but my wife and I were exceptionally blown away by the Duo of Tuna! It was so amazing and concluded that no other restaurant will be able to do this. Visited for Saturday lunch. Although the restaurant only had about 5 tables, several waiters and a âhostessâ, service was glacial. Our starter plates and empty glasses remained on the table for 20 minutes before being cleared. We then ordered some wine which after 10 mins still had not arrived after which point we left. We could see the âhostessâ had been made aware of this but seemingly could care less. As for the food, the risotto was completely overcoooked into a mush. Awful.
