The Hotel Vignemale suggested that we would like the Restaurant Les Cascade and booked dinner for us. The food was delicious and innovative. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. Wines good. As the village has permanent water purification problems all their water is bottled, even when served in the carafe. WC good. Parking can be difficult in season.

There are few restaurants open in June in Gavarnie but visitors are lucky to have this one as an option. We ate here twice and had excellent meals both times - the trout with pasta, pizza and duck burger were all delicious and well prepared. The service was warm and friendly and we appreciated that the chef came out on both evenings to ensure we were pleased with our meals. I can also recommend the dessert: the cafe gourmand and lemon tart are lovely! The dining room is comfortable and visitors preferring to sit outside overlook a gushing stream, adding to a pleasant atmosphere.

After walking for about an hour from Gavarnie, you arrive at the Hotellerie du Cirque, a large nineteenth century building seated below the entrance to the towering glacial bowl. This busy old hotel, somewhat faded in its majesty, now functions only as a restaurant in the high season, but it offers probably one of the finest glacial views in the world and is a welcome place to enjoy a cool beer and an al fresco lunch of local meats and cheeses. The Cirque, a World Heritage Site, attracts about a million tourists each year. And the prices at the Hotellerie, a veritable honey trap, reflect this. Be prepared to pay through the nose for a glass of Grimbergen beer, but what a backdrop you have from its sunny terrace! Certainly one for the bucket list!
