On our first driving trip to France, 35 years ago, by the second meal my wife commented: "if the food isn't this good in heaven, we are not going." We have been to many fine French restaurants in the last third of a century-from the three star Michelin temples-to modest bars and bistros in villages and working class neighborhoods. It is possible to get a bad meal in France, but you have to work hard at it. Only the rankest tourist areas take pleasure in trashing the nation's culinary patrimony.What we have come to like best are simple places that try very hard and achieve exceptional results. This is the kind of husband and wife establishment where they have put their heart and soul into the enterprise; there is considerable talent and passion, respect for the finest local produce and they all show. The setting is stylish if lean: rattan chairs, tables covered in lovely lemongrass green linens.On a Saturday night they were booked solid-a large table of 12, a table of 5 and two deuces. Yet our hostess kept everything moving along, gracefully and graciously. We opted for a 3 course menu at 35 or so Euros each, and a bottle of Bandol Rose at a similar price. All three courses were assembled with great attention to detail, with a complex combination of flavors and delivered on attractive plates or flat stones in a very harmonious array.No doubt, if we lived in or near this town-we would be regulars. Of course, we have had fancier meals, and perhaps a number that were more of a revelation. But this evening there was no venue we would rather be in, watching the local burghers enjoying themselves and knowing we were in a very good place. We will remember the meal for a very long time and hope to return. From our experience, the chef is very skilled in preparing both poultry and fish-and especially, lovingly, vegetables.

A lunchtime discovery while working in the area, this place was a sparkling surprise.Location : A sufficiently pleasant pedestrian street with a few seats outside, however parking is tricky in the area and there isnât much by way of a view.Decor : Unfortunately the decor does not live up the standards set by the service and the food. In a modern style which is unrelated to the traditional-inspiration cuisine, it is rather cold and tasteless. Service : The landlord was attentive and conscientious, as well as very warm and welcome. He was passionate about his restaurant and the cuisine and provided very detailed colourful explanations of the dishes, and the service was fast and efficient.Food : This is the selling point of this restaurant : the cuisine is inspired by french traditional cuisine with a modern experimental twist and relying on local fresh ingredients. The quality was great and the food was easily the best tasting I tried in the whole Valence area. My main dish was a perfectly prepared piece of lamb with local vegetables and mushrooms and it was sincerely delicious. The dessert also did not disappoint :)Price : It is not the cheapest place in town, but it a very fair price for the quality of cuisine they served, it is still very much a good deal (3 course meal + coffee for under 30 euros).Overall, you will have no regrets about eating here and it is not far from a 5/5.
