Szechuan Mountain House

Reviewed By Gammie8

This nicely decorated upscale Szechuan restaurant is really excellent. The colorful and unusual menu offers lots of choices, from soups and hot pots to stir fried dishes like rabbit and frog legs, and all manner of seafood, from crab and lobster to a delicious crispy fried sea bass, which we had. It was a good sized fish, wonderfully sauced with pork, garlic, and spices. The mapo tofu was exquisite, as good as anything in China, silky and full of Szechuan peppercorn for that unique tip of the tongue tingle. Yes, the food is spicy, but authentically so. One quibble is the priciness of the wine list. No glasses offered, and the one bottle of white wine listed was $60, a Grgich Hills Fume Blanc. FYI, no reservations for parties under 6, and the place is packed. PS, there is a St Marks Place branch of this restaurant in NYC.

We love authentic Chinese food but dread finding parking in Flushing Queens. We recently found Long King House in College point with a parking spot directly in front of the restaurant.Service was attentive and friendly. Food was nicely prepared and great tasting. Their soup dumplings rival those we have had in Flushing and had the right umami and freshness that we crave when wanting Asian fair. We especially enjoyed their shrimp and eggs. This is a dish that is difficult for us to find and this place does it well; the shrimp tasted fresh and the eggs Perfectly prepared. We also had their pan fried noodles and vegetables. Again this dish did not disappoint plenty of fresh crunchy vegetables a top lightly crunchy pan fried noodles. Please see pictures of menus below for offerings and prices.

Although I live in Bangkok there are some Chinese dishes that are simply not available there. Chinese food in America is selected for what American’s find palatable. My favorite is General Tsu Chicken as it is filling and goes down well. So needless to say that is what I ordered. I was not disappointed and made a worth a quick review. So simply this place is good with no additional fanfare. The majority of the orders are take-away, and for good reason. Seating is very basic with no frills, so eating at home is almost encourage. In other words this place is a copy of dozens of other Chinese takeout restaurants and is hard to tell them apart. In the end good food, full tummy and a smile.

This restaurant did not get a Michelin star but was written up as a "notable" destination. On closer examination they liked the main courses, and we went for Dim Sum. Very good variety of dim sum but really poor quality. One of the many tests of a place like this are the rice noodle dishes. At their best the noodle is soft and chewy and very thin. These were thick and doughy. Congee is another test of mine and this one was thin and watery and missing the many great ingredients associated with this dish. First congee I did not finish and I have a pretty wide latitude. The food was tired, and many of the dishes had been around too long before serving, although we arrived at 11AM as the appointed hour to get the freshest dishes. We had the custard tart desserts, and although the crust was flakey and good, the custard itself was not at its freshest. We did get good chrysanthemum tea by having Siri translate it into Mandarin.

Now this type of cuisine isn't for the average diner...why? It's spicy but oh so good! You can really get that spicy burn for people who can really appreciate the heat level. Let me preface this that it is not just the heat but a delicious slow heat that envelopes your palate to a blissful state. It's not a heat that hits you right away but the flavor comes out...really GOOD! I truly love this place and yes it's out of the average Flushing area but it's well worth the drive to come here. Please have an open mind and a eager stomach to taste the Sichuan cuisine. They do have the usual lunch specials but heck...go for the specialties of the house instead. Here are some of my favorites. Sliced Beef tendon in Sichuan peper oil(apps), dan dan noodles, spicy Sichuan beef noodles, dumpings in hot oil(in fact it's a blend of heat and sweetness-so yummy), mo po tofu-the sauce to die for, braised sliced lamb or fish-delish pot of spicy goodness...and plenty more! The food is quite unique and if you are into the spicy goodness of Sichuan cuisine...go for it! Oh BTW, it's a cash only business so bring them dollars. The portions are very reasonable and you will go home with a spicy grin because you got your FIX:) There are dishes that are not spicy for the other people in your dining group so you can be kind and order stuff that they can eat. I do that everytime my wife goes with me...she's not a hothead like me:)haha You can really taste the love the chef puts into his cooking to showcase his home cuisine. Parking is street parking although there is a municipal parking lot about 2 blocks away on College Point Boulevard, no big deal. Good to walk off the yummy food you'll be devouring!Happy eating and I'll see ya around the table!

Note that most locations of this chain of restaurants is no frills, self serve, and crowded. Many in food courts or basements. For an adventurous outing you can try several restaurants in the same food court and try one or two things at each one.

At Shanghai You Garden, they want you in and out as fast as possible. I'm okay with that. The more churn, the better the revenue, the better the business. That's especially true if your product is good. However, I can't say that the products (the food) are even good, which is why I was surprised at its popularity. Most of the dishes (small and large) were just mediocre.Hey, Tunaidi. We're sorry you had this impression of us. It's a bit out of the way in College Point and the parking lot can get crowded, but the food is pretty good with a good variety of Asian choices. We came early on a Saturday at 5:30pm. The place was not crowded yet and everything was well-stocked. The restaurant looked clean and well-maintained. If you're facing west, you get a nice glimpse of sunset and the Manhattan skyline.

I had heard of Soup Dumplings, but never had the opportunity to experience them. A co-worker was in from out of town and we were working in Queens. He suggested this facility as he had been here years before. We shared an order of Soup Dumplings which were extraordinary for my first experience. We then shared a couple of entrees from the menu. Pleasant experience with nice staff, comfortable dining room and delicious food. I will return again with others.
