Mykonos

Probably one of the biggest pleasant surprises of my trip to Germany was finding this jewel Greek restaurant-Mykonos- in the heart of Recklinghausen! I have been to quite a few Greek rastaurants in the past years, some good and I will review a few more soon, so you can take advantage, but this one was a great surprise. Privately run by a Greek family, the place offers authentic Greek food... I visited it with 2 good German friends and everything they offer was fantastic, just the way it should be... I personally tried their mousaka which was one of the best I have ever tried (almost as good as the one I make, a very high standard to rich!)... my friends tried some lamb chops and lamb steak, absolutely perfectly cooked! Cooking lamb it's a hard thing and most fail, as I guess you know... but these people got it right! The wine was great and original and the menu offer was absolutely impressive by its diversity! The ambiance is super, too, the location is great, the place is very clean and the staff-headed by the owner himself- extremely attentive and caring to the guests. Last but not least was to discover they all spoke Greek, too!!! Besides German and English, of course... What a pleasure it was to be there, too bad I found it on my last day in the city! Definitely a memorable stop for anybody who may be in the area! Euxaristo poli kurie Dimitris!

Have been to Schloss Berge several times in the last 3 months and always for business diners. The hotel / restaurant is located in a picturesque park area, which is well maintained, and the property buildings and interior are also well appointed and maintained.Food is mostly German cuisine served in generous portions and consistently good. This is a down-to-earth cuisine that seems to cater more to those enjoying a good German beer or German wine with their meal. Gourmets & foodies looking for the next big dining experience may find other restaurants in the region more to their liking. Nonetheless, everything my colleagues and I had at Schloss Berge was well cooked, well presented and a joy to eat. We also felt that the service provided was consistently very good, and that staff and waiters are very attentive to customer needs.I recommend this property for relaxed dinners in style in groups of max. 4 people who come very hungry and appreciate a good Schnaps after getting some good carb- and fat-rich German cooking into their bellies.

Elsasser Stube

Why I have not reviewed this venue before I cannot explain - perhaps because it is so 'chic' that it is out of the normal for holiday visitors and a secret for the locals, but again this vist was exceptionally good. Beware, it is not cheap - indeed some may find it over the top for the size of the plates served, but there was plenty to add to the main item - my first course was shrimps in a Pernod Sauce -simply WOW. For the main I took a chance. I have seem Loach being thrown back by my fishing friends in England and never on a menu - indeed we had to look up the English to translate to Loach. Needless to say I will try and introduce it to my friends the next time we are in town - it was superbly cooked and presented. The venue oozes class, and the service was not only polite, but with a friendly twist which left me feeling very welcome and able to ask 'silly' questions of the menu - something which sometimes can be a little embarrassing. Please save up and try Elsasser Stube (with or without the 'umlaut')

Bullerkotte

Reviewed By Kevin C

Despite the mania for inventiveness that overtaxes our era, a place remains for a restaurant that can deliver competently conservative high cuisine. That conservative taste seems to be the focus of Bullerkotte, which draws together many of the characteristics of the current farm-to-table movement without explicitly identifying or boasting about them. Bullerkotte might be described as a dignified monument to the first wave of German cuisine: to the earliest attempts to create a "fine" cuisine based on German products and traditions. On one hand, the menu and the venue have aspirations. Written in a curious idiom in which German and French cooking idioms merge and intertwine, the menu celebrates favorite German proteins such as duck, ox, chicken, and, of course, sausage, including blood sausage. Overall, the dishes could be described as somewhat "meaty." An oxen filet, for example, arrived somewhat mysteriously topped by a whole, in-the-shell prawn, as if a freak tidal wave had unexpectedly swept seafood into the butcher's shop. This kind of multi-story layering of diverse meats reached its acme in the 1990s--and it still produces the same unfortunate result, to wit, an initial sense of amazement followed by a feeling that a dish is somewhat overloaded. Many of the chef's inventions evidence a high level of creativity. For example, dinner opens with a marvelously memorable cucumber spread that, in lieu of butter, imparts a laudable vegetable as well as herbal taste to perfectly rendered baguette slices. The blood sausage appetizer features a stuffing of the aforementioned protein pudding artfully rolled in puff pastry and accompanied by a micro-greens salad, all to uplifting effect. Equally creative albeit somewhat less successful is the duck breast and spaghettini combination, in which three perfectly rendered and exquisitely seasoned duck slices avalanche their way down a vortex of pasta, all alongside a tangy cheese tuile. Probably it would have been more effective to integrate the duck and the pasta more effectively--perhaps by creating a duck-stuffed ravioli--but the merit of the taste could not be disputed. As previously mentioned, main courses at Bullerkotte seem, to modern tastes, somewhat out-of-balance, with great weight given to the protein and somewhat perfunctory attention going to the accompaniments. Both the oxen steak and the local chicken appeared atop an eddy of mixed vegetables in a dark brown sauce that savored a little too much of soy sauce or similar seasoning. Although the vegetables themselves were spot-on and perfectly poached, they added nothing memorable to the overall composition. The chicken main course had been identified as a "tandoori" recipe, but its mildness and wholeheartedly European flavor profile conjured no thought of India while the aforementioned soy-flavored sauce led diners to wonder whether south and north Asia had been confused. Bullerkotte offers a lovely setting in the farmlands outside of the industrial Ruhr Valley. The restaurant occupies what appears to be a former farmhouse. Interior decor is, again, straight out of the elegant 1990s. All is tasteful, all is deluxe--but also all is beige. A full house creates a cheerful ambience, although the clientele might be characterized as rugged rural gentry rather than as city slickers. Bullerkotte makes for a pleasant country evening. It would be wonderful to see the chef turn some of his admirable talents to a bit of updating of both menu and envrionment, but, in general, the Bullerkotte experience is a pleasant one.

Oh my, where to start. This restoraunt is a pure gem in NRW's food scene. Discretely tucked away in the quite little town of Herten, but trust me, most "big city" steakhouses can't compete with these guys. The decór of the place is nice, its cosy and comfy, and gives off that "family owned restourant" vibe. The prices are more than reasonable, and the service is friendly and fast, our food arrived pretty quick, and damn, it was delicious. Their starter specialty is a onion soup, but with a twist, seeing as they put fresh chesse on top off the bowl, and let it melt. it is delicious!Their cordon bleu was also amazing, it was as tasty as it looked, and as you can see, it looked delicious! But the definite star of the show is their "Adria" steak. 100% (as they state in their menu) argentinian beef, with an amazing mushroom + home-made hollandaise sauce. It is probably the best steak i have ever had in my Life! All in all, i highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good meal!

S.Presso

Reviewed By Kevin C

Everyone knows the old cliche about finding a needle in a haystack: about locating a valuable resource in a heap of chaff. That idea applies with joyous vigor to the cleverly named S.Presso, a superb Italian bistro hidden along a twisted route in post-industrial Recklinghausen. To be sure, the venue seems less than promising, with its less-than-optimal view of a 1970s concrete-and-glass shopping bunker across the narrow street. Yet, through force of personality and through clever decorating, the proprietors of S.Presso have created a genuine Italian street-side feel, as if one were dining along a quaint old walkway in the purlieus of Rome. Better still is the cuisine. Inventive and yet solid, traditionally Italian yet also occasionally innovative, the menu at S.Presso, which abounds in both standard dishes and daily specials, presents all the options that a diner at an Italian eatery would expect yet dazzles the imagination with new inventions (for example, the new vegetable, zucchini-based bruschetta). Every dish that we enjoyed during no less than three visits was brilliantly executed, whether the umami-abundant Gorgonzola pasta or the crisply vibrant pizza or the scrumptious appetizers. Service is friendly but pleasantly understated; quiet competence is the watchword. A veritable Cinderella's slipper in amidst the clog-like interior of old Recklinghausen, S.Presso can hold its own against any Italian cafe anywhere in the world. Its food, especially its homemade pasta, is always delicious and is always executed on-point; its atmosphere is friendly, convivial, and uplifting, as if it were irradiated with Italian sunshine.
