Tirana, the Republic of Albania's largest city, is blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate, a plethora of beautiful churches and lush parks. Founded in 1614, some striking Mussolini-era architecture dots the city center. Walk between sights such as Skanderbeg Square's 1789 Et'hem Bey Mosque, the 1830 Sahat-Kulla (Clock Tower) and the Puppet Theater, once home to King Zog's puppet parliament. Visit the Peace Bell, built with old cartridge shells, a reminder of Tirana's stormy past.

The almost endless list of homemade raki or brandy is the star attraction at this place, although the interior enjoys second billing for being so eclectic. Nose around and check out the one-whole-lek note from the 1970s - ironically probably highly valuable these days - and other curios from the Communist era while you're there. The staff are happy to give you some insight into them.We came here for a nightcap and enjoyed the blackberry and honey & cinnamon rakis, accompanied by a lovely berry tart and mixed nut cake. The menu is in Albanian only, but Google Translate will help on that front (the staff as well, no doubt, if you ask them). For two brandies and cakes the bill came to 670 lek - a mere â¬5.50.Addendum: we came back here for another nightcap a few nights later. I wanted to try the cardamom raki but they didn't have any, so I took the mulberry. It was fine, but the berry sweetness was subtle to the point of being barely perceptible. My husband's walnut raki did what it said on the tin though.

Spotted by several international and local blogs. Thurje 17 ( Hashtag17) is among Tirana`s most popular small caffes. Located in the heart of the city ( well connected to Pazari i Ri) it offers a variety of home made products such as Thurje17 Signature Sm
We popped in here on the strength of the review of the smoothies and shakes the place offers and weren't disappointed - my chocolate & strawberry milkshake (with real strawberries) was very good and cost just 260 lek or about â¬2.20.Note that the name above the door on the nondescript building simply says '17' - there's no mention of 'Thurje'.
