Would never have expected this in Birkenshaw, but the place is fantastic and the food even better. Came with family for a `significant' birthday lunch after travelling from Oxfordshire, and it was well worth it. The owners have created an amazing place, nice staff, lovely food. Some people mentioned slow service. We would say that with food like that, time to relax and really enjoy a totally different gastronomic experience is a luxury to be savoured. Loved it - hope we will be back.

The Garden Coffee Lounge

Reviewed By 346terryp

Well we were wondering where to go yesterday (Monday 17/12/2018) afternoon for a coffee and perhaps a snack when we decided this would be a good place to go.Initially we thought oops! as they are serving Christmas dinners with people sitting with their crackers and hats on and we assumed that we were going to be unlucky for that snack. Well we were so wrong as we were welcomed in and given a table by the window. The menu arrived and everything was on as normal. As luck would have it their sausage sandwiches were not sold out (these can be in the afternoon) so we both ordered one. To say the sausages are good here would be an understatement as they are fantastic and if you get the opportunity get in and enjoy (before they are sold out). Alternatively they are also renowned for their bacon or even better why not ask for something with eggs as this is the place to come and buy your fresh eggs rather than the supermarket. Anyway enough of me going on this is a family run business and they give excellent service as we again found out yesterday. We ordered a portion of sticky toffee pudding and custard to share as we thought why not it’s Christmas. Unfortunately when my wife started eating it the pudding was on the hard side and had a lack of sticky toffee. We brought it to the attention of (sorry I don’t know your name) one of the guys serving who I believe is one of the family members and without hesitation he took the plate away apologising as he went. He returned with a new portion along with fresh custard and it tasted like a dream come true. On thinking about it, perhaps the first portion might have been the last piece of an earlier pudding and the second potion was perhaps the first segment of a new one. The bit I’m trying to get at, is that this is not the norm here and was a one off, being resolved to everyone’s satisfaction without issue and you can’t ask for anymore than that.So if you are passing through the Hightown/Liversedge area just off of Halifax Road, be sure to pop in as I’m positive they will make you welcome (even if they are doing Christmas dinners :) )Well done to the staff and thanks for everything.Merry Christmas The Patterson’s

Brook's

Reviewed By MumtoScruffy

I would rate this restaurant as Good but unfortunately, Trip Advisor do not have a rating for this level. We were looking forward to trying the new revamped Brooks and visited with friends recently. We received a very warm greeting on entering into the bar area from the female owner which immediately made us feel welcome. We we’re asked if we wanted a drink in the bar or go to the table and decided on the latter although there was a great buzz in the bar from people sat at the high tables enjoying a good natter.First impression of the restaurant was that it is no longer the Old Brooks; the new owners have certainly put their mark on this place and these changes have altered the atmosphere of the dining experience (in a good way) which will probably appeal to a much broader age range of clientele. Whilst we enjoyed our pre dinner drinks, we perused the menu deciding on which dishes we would order to share and was a little confused as many of the them were not what we would have thought of as sharing plates. We did notice that most of the surrounding diners ordered a plate each as a starter and then a second plate as a main course and that the only sharing element of the meal were the bowls of side vegetables. We asked the owner if she could advise us on how the sharing thing worked and basically was told that many do order a “starter” and then a large plate each for mains which went against the concept of sharing plates. When the first dishes were served the food looked and smelled delicious and I couldn’t wait to start eating. We all agreed that the food was good but that only one of the four dishes (gnocchi) leant itself to “sharing”. The others; pigs cheek with scallop, venison and crab were small portions of well presented plated food which wouldn’t sensibly portion up to share unless you reached across the table and took a forkful from the individuals dish. Also, if these were intended for sharing why weren’t plates brought to the table to allow this. It was the same with mains, how could a piece of belly pork in the cassoulet and short rib beef be shared without someone playing “mother “ and taking the meat off of the bone and cutting it into small portions this surely goes against the concept of the easy sharing platters? Let me say that we all enjoyed the food and sampled some dishes that were new to us but this still felt like a more grown up style of dining rather than the more relaxed way by having a bite to eat and at the same time enjoying a drink and a good natter as is the case with tapas/cicchetti.The biggest disappointment was the wine which just didn’t deliver. We ordered the most expensive red, a bottle of Valpolicella at £34 and expected a rich fruity smooth wine however what we got was something that was very lacking being watery and not having any of the richness of a decent Italian red. We are very much into our Italian wines and know a decent one when we taste it but this just didn’t cut the mustard. In fact it is unheard of that when the four of us are dining out that we don’t go into a second bottle but we truthfully struggled in consuming just the one. The house wine I had as an appetitive was actually as good as the Valpolicella and at the significantly lower price of £20.Overall, we did enjoy our time at The new Brooks but it wasn’t the dining experience it promised and therefore left us a little disappointed. We love the concept of sharing but it was neither this or a formal dining event. On a positive note, the food and service was of a good standard.Thank you for your review. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the atmosphere and food. Sorry to hear you were disappointed with the wine. Had you mentioned that you were not happy at the time, we would have changed the wine for you. We have a passion for wine and hope our wine list reflects that. We definitely wouldn't like to think that someone had paid for something they thought was of bad quality and did not enjoy. We hope you will return to give us another chance. Many thanks from the Brook's team.

Firstly can I say that the staff here are friendly and the menu is varied and the main meals we had were very tasty. The problems we encountered however seem to be common in that various meals on the menu were not in stock or available, so we had to look at alternatives. Our two desserts were nice but Luke warm not hot and again desired items were not available, so the pub lost out on starter orders and dessert orders.I was disappointed as we had friends over from America who wanted a traditional English pub meal with certain items that were on the menu but as mentioned not available. We also waited around an hour to get our food served even though we had reserved a table, there needs fo be improvements to tempt us back.

My daughter and new son-in-law recently had their wedding here and I have to say the whole day was an absolute delight. Hubby and I have dined here on numerous occasions and been highly delighted with every aspect of our visit. The wedding day was out of this world from start to finish. The staff at this venue really go out of their way to accommodate every requirement and give the happy couple (and the brides mum!!) memories to treasure. Special mentions must go to several members of staff. Matt the wedding co-ordinator who was one step ahead of us all day and sorted out problems before we were even aware of them! Andrew and Phil the chefs who produce the most amazing meals both for the main meal and the night reception.. The new addition of the pizza oven is awesome and the guests are still talking about how good they were and such a change from the usual hot/cold buffet or sandwiches. Every member of staff we came across provided the highest level of service from the ladies on reception, the breakfast waitress to the bar staff …. names too numerous to remember but thanks go to each and every one of you.I would have no hesitation in recommending this beautiful hotel as a wedding venue or as a dining experience for those special occasions
