We only booked this restaurant about three hours before arriving and we were expecting to be seated at a high-bar table which is less than perfect for a romantic pre-holiday dinner. I did request a standard table but the manager advised that they were otherwise fully booked. To explain: I don’t usually leave things like restaurant reservations to the last minute, and we had known for several months that we would be in Portsmouth (for a ferry crossing). Sadly, we had been let down by another restaurant in Portsmouth (see separate review) that we had booked 3 months earlier. On arrival at the G&O we were pleased to note the quirky but pleasant décor, and by the fact that the manager had sorted-out an ordinary table for us. Indeed, the restaurant was busy and we were further encouraged to see some splendid-looking food arriving on other tables. We ordered a starter and mains, and sat back and sipped an excellent South African Chenin Blanc whilst we waited. Our chosen starter was a sharing platter – one of several types offered. I wanted to order the ‘Sea Sharer’ but whitebait is not one of my partner’s favourites and we both detest squid. My partner preferred the ‘Casual Sharer’ described “To Include A Selection of Artisan Bread, Cheese, Cured Meat, Mixed Spiced Nuts, Olives & Onion Chutney”. When it arrived, it was huge, featuring two pieces each of three cheeses and a whole goat’s cheese, three kinds of cured meats in very generous portions, three kinds of bread, plus the olives, nuts and pickle. We half expected the waiter to ask “Where’s your mates?”It was all very good – but not my personal favourite types of cheese – the (I guess) Cranberry Wensleydale (or maybe Cheddar) was pleasant but tasted more of fruit than cheese, the AppleWood Smoked Cheddar was good but it’s not something I would ever buy, the Brie was good but I avoid full-fat soft cheese and this obviously means the Goat’s cheese didn’t particularly suit me either. Conversely my partner is fond of Brie and especially fond of Goat’s cheese, quite likes AppleWood Smoked, and at least tried the Cranberried offering. The problem was not one of preference but of quantity – it was far too much. The cheese alone would have been generous for a party of four!Good also were the meats, they were great! I really liked these but again – just too much for a starter. The pickle was excellent as were the olives. There was a mountain of bread – 6 slices of excellent artisan breads I will say, but yes … just far too much. This starter was a main meal for two, I kid you not. If we had managed to finish it all we would not have had enough appetite remaining for our mains. We took a good tilt at it because we recognised the quality but we could not get anywhere near finishing it.The mains were also generous: two good thick 8oz fillet steaks with peppercorn sauce, French beans sautéed with fried onions, field mushrooms, good beer-battered onion rings and fabulously fat chips. After indulging in the shared starter, we just about had room for the mains, and even then, we couldn’t finish the chips. A desert was just not going to happen, so the restaurant lost out on any additional expenditure we would have made, and at the same time had a lot of good produce returned uneaten – lessons to be learned here! The only serious criticism we had of the mains was the taste (or lack of it) of the steak. I was bland – no really deep taste that you should get with a quality prime fillet. It was perfectly cooked – pink to a fault. The peppercorn sauce was also a bit bland, I would guess it had been bought-in rather than home-made.More expensive ingredients and less quantity please.

Having been to frankie & bennys a lot of times including breakfast and always been happy with our visit. The restaurant is nice and reasonably priced and conveniently located for a cinema/dinner trip. However on our most recent visit I walked into the restaurant slightly ahead of my boyfriend by around 2 minutes and was completely ignored and look past by the immediate front desk staff who literally stared through me as if I didn’t exist. When my boyfriend then walked in they straight away greeted him and asked him if he would like a table, again ignoring me completely. Couldn’t help being hugely offended and the apparent situation but we continued regardless. Breakfast was good as usual and well priced, also included taste card which saved us some money. The only downside except for the greeting was that one glass of orange juice cost £3.39 which is just extortionate! It’s a half pint of orange juice (not fresh) and is mostly watered down with ice so I really can’t see why this price is justified.

Good menu, lots of tasty sounding things to try. Nachos were excellent, so much topping and nice big chunks of chicken breast. All had burgers which again were good, really liked the skinny crispy chips! Eten mess for dessert was a good potion size and super yummy. We used meerkat 2 for 1 so was incredible value for money. Service was really good, both people serving were helpful and really friendly.
