Saiko Sushi

There are sushi places all over San Diego. Coronado Island also has its fair share. What makes Saiko Sushi stand out is a prime location on Coronado's Orange Avenue restaurant corridor, an innovative menu and quality ingredients. As a bonus, the staff is knowledgeable, helpful and professional. Happy hour is a bargain with both food and drink specials. We particularly enjoyed the dirty rice, a side dish that was a surprising mixture of rice, shrimp, vegetables and tropical fruit. Recommended.

This was our 2nd visit to this local restaurant. Slightly off the beaten path, this is a pleasant spot to enjoy a quiet meal inside or out. Good service and as noted, great food. This visit, we had the Drunken Noodles and Pineapple Rice, served spicy as requested. We have had the Penang Curry and Red Curry before and were pleased then and now.

Went solo and pitched up at the sushi bar. Salmon and tuna nigiri was amazing. The spicy tiger was a favorite. Honestly the best sushi I have eaten in a great while. They have 5-6 beers on tap as well so if you are into that it is awesome as well. Super happy with the choice to go here. Writing this review after my second time visiting - truly amazing sushi - highly recommended.

Island Pasta Coronado

Reviewed By lesliecarroll13

For a place that has "pasta" in its name, you'd think that would be the one item they could prepare to perfection. But my husband and I came to the simultaneous conclusion that at some point we'd had much better meals in an Applebee's (!) where we had no expectations of decent, let alone, good, homemade (which Island Pasta specializes in) pasta. First, there was no salt in either of the pasta dishes (rule #1 of cooking pasta -- salt the water!), so the pasta in itself was tasteless. My husband's olio spaghetti was overcooked (rule #2: pasta should be al dente) and totally bland. So inedible and poorly prepared that we sent it back in exchange for a simple salad because there were so few menu items (nearly everything here has a sweetener of some sort in it) that he could eat. The garlic in my garlic chicken over fettucine overwhelmed everything. And there was no discernable salt in the dish, so all I tasted was garlic over a gummy cream sauce. I think those drowned lumps were the chicken. It was, as my husband said, "a TV dinner minus the sodium." When I asked for ground pepper (expecting the waiter to bring a large pepper mill), he brought over a glass jar of red pepper flakes. As for the service, it was both indifferent and clueless (2 different staffers were unfamiliar with the ingredients in their own menu--PIZZA -- their other main menu item--and one of us has a food allergy that could land us in the ER if we don't know what's in the food.) The pink lemonade just tasted pink. If you know good Italian food -- just don't eat here. Try somewhere across the bridge in Little Italy if you have a craving for pasta. Island Pasta was near our hotel and it was our last night in Coronado. The notion of "homemade pasta" sounded appetizing, and as traveling NYCers, we were a bit homesick. But we made a big mistake. I may never get the taste of garlic off my tongue and goopy sauce out of my gorge.
