Reviews on American food in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. The home to Yale University since 1701, the city of New Haven is packed with an unrivaled collection of arts and antiquities, with collections ranging from natural history specimens to antique musical instruments. The towering translucent marble cube of the Beinecke Library contains 600,000 rare volumes, including one of the only surviving Gutenberg Bibles. The Yale University Art Gallery is as famous for its collection as it is for its building, a Modernist masterpiece designed by Louis Kahn.

If you go to Bella’s for breakfast on a Sunday morning, expect to wait. The place recalls Yogi Berra’s famous quip about Toots Shor’s Restaurant in Manhattan: “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.” When you get inside, it’s a fairly safe bet you’ll also feel a little cramped. But nobody who goes to Bella’s goes to be seated quickly or to dine in the lap of luxury. Everybody who goes there goes for the food.It doesn’t matter what you order. It’ll be great, and you’ll leave stuffed. The coffee is so good, I asked our waitress what it was. She told us it’s Jim’s Costa Rican blend. I don’t know who Jim is, but he knows his way around a cup o’ Joe. And Bella’s knows its way around a killer breakfast.

The food was very good also. This restaurant is perfect for a special date night, or just a special event with family or friends. I will be back.

As one of the top rated restaurants in New Haven I had high expectations for Heirloom and the disappointed. The restaurant is modern chrome and glass and sits on the edge of Yale University. They were not busy when we arrived and we were seated and drink orders taken quickly. Food preparation was slow so come prepared to wait. The baked Jonah crab was spicy with no crab flavour - unpleasant. The smoked Maine trout was excellent, the hit of the night. My daughter had pasta and enjoyed it. My branzino was 3 small over cooked fillets with no sauce and no flavour. My wife’s chicken was dry and nothing special.Don’t be mislead by their on-line menu, there were only 6-8 entrees offered the night we dined.Frankly, no reason to go back. Bill was $155 for 3 before tip with 2 glasses of wine, one beer and no dessert.

Six of us went to Shell and Bones for a birthday dinner celebration. What disappointed our party may be what would attract others. Let me explain. First, parking is atrocious. The parking lot is far to small for the size of the restaurant, and valet parking is available and virtually imperative....but reasonable at $5.00. Our party was seated at a nice large round high-top table, normally conducive to conversation. However, the restaurant’s popularity attracts many people, and the attendant noise makes conversation difficult unless one doesn’t mind shouting. Twenty (20) minutes passed before anyone stopped by to take drink orders, and that was only after we asked for some attention. It was another 20 minutes before drinks arrived. We were READY to drink by that time! Everything at Shell and Bones happens VERY SLOWLY. You will spend a long while waiting for everything, and the noise makes the passing oftime difficult. The six of us ordered 5 different appetizers and meals. They ranged from excellent (the scallop and shrimp ceviches app, the shell and bones entree) to fair (shrimp fra diavolo was bland and filet mignon was bathed in seasoning which overpowered the meat flavor). We almost passed on desert, because the live music began and added to the din, but we did order deserts and they were unique and very good. As I said in the beginning, the aspects of this business which we found to be negative may not bother some patrons, but with the exception of one couple in our threesome, we would not return. Oh, by the way, we were seated at 6:30 and left the restaurant at 10:30. Yes, FOUR (4) hours...far too slow paced for our taste.
