This meal will go on to my list of memorable meals. Top quality ingredients were used in dishes that were interesting and beautifully prepared. Service was attentive, helpful and friendly, the restaurant was light and airy with attractive table settings. Our table had a view over the town. The wine was good. Strongly recommended.

Polar-Cafeteria Jamoneria

Reviewed By Terri A - Lugo, Spain

Friday night saw us in Monforte so we decided to eat in Polar. During the day it is always busy in it´s cafeteria and outside Terrace so it´s is popular with locals as well as tourists.
As with most Spanish restaurants, don´t expect early dinner, we entered around 9.30pm and a few tables were occupied, however people were still arriving and being made welcome at 11.30pm.
The menu was extensive, Kidneys & rice , Pastas, Pizzas, Salads, Shellfish, Fish & meat all available but we chose the Sollomillo ( fillet steak) which was incredibly tender and true as the waitress advised us ... like butter ! Both portions were generous ( infact too large for either of us to finish) and I chose salad rather than chips or rice.
What I must compliment the restaurant on is it´s waitressing service. All the waiters & waitresses were friendly and helpful.
Excellent value for money!

This is a regular haunt, it´s not a restaurant and doesn´t need to be as if offers a variety of tapas and raciones and the local wines are extremely enjoyable. Carlos and his staff and very friendly and we always enjoy our visit. There are options for vegetarians and their tortilla is one of the best around.

The setting of this restaurant is pleasant in the summer and there are tables with a river view.
The food is ample and priced very reasonably and if value for money is your object, you could do no better, however on my visit, I found the service too rushed. The service was friendly enough but the overall effect was not a relaxing meal.

La Maja

After a period of many years, we returned to La Maja. I chose the menú del dia whilst my husband had a pizza. I actually only had two of the first courses, the seafood salad followed by a pasta salad. Both were very well presented and for me, the perfect quantity. I tried some of the pizza and for my taste it was a little stodgy as I prefer the crispy style of base. The pizza menú was also limited and again, personally as far as pizzas are concerned there are better places in Monforte. However I would return as the menú del dia was good.

Centro Del Vino de la Ribera Sacra

The Centro Del Vino sells a wide range of wines from the surrounding Ribeira Sacra region. One staff member speaks good English and helped us locate bottles from producers close to where we had been staying. Prices were a bit above bodega and local cafes levels but it is town centre and met our needs to find wines to remember our home in Galicia.

Hunting and fishing are typical local activities. Here you can enjoy excellent trout or eels, and game such as venison and hare. Lacón con grelos (a pork and vegetable stew) with chorizo sausage; zorza sausage, tripe, and octopus Feira style are other typical local dishes.

I had dinner with my fellow business travelers early this month, since our local host said that they specialize in the "Rubia Gallega" beef of the region. We were quite thrilled when we sat down and saw the menu, and soon decided to center our meal around a couple of very thick-cut t-bones and french fries, along with a few starters.
Our server presented the freshly butchered steaks, and after we excitedly approved, disappeared into the kitchen. About 10-15 minutes later the steaks were served, but with an interactive process involved. The kitchen sears the steaks, but we had a table-top hot plate set at the center of our table in order to finish the sliced pieces to our liking. Our local host told us that the trick is to cut off a few pieces of fat and use them to "season" the flattop and then finish the slices of sirloin and tenderloin to your desired temperatures. So good!
The french-fried potatoes were key to pair with the meat, and we had a little bit of salad to go with...which apparently set us apart from the locals (haha).
