Mammoth Lakes Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Mammoth Lakes

April 14, 2018 Roger Rusk

High in the Eastern Sierra of California is the growing ski resort town of Mammoth Lakes, surrounded by alpine beauty and majesty. Powdered peaks of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and surrounding wilderness draw skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers and ice skaters every winter. Summers are quieter and less crowded, but vacationers in search of the path less traveled will find secluded biking and hiking trails, rushing rivers, icy mountain lakes, green golf courses and breathtaking scenery.

Shea Schat's Bakery

Great bakery in Mammoth Lakes specializing in sheepherders bread, sandwiches and a "komisch night" interior. Schat's bakeries are found in both Bishop and Mammoth Lakes. They offer coffee and lunch sandwiches.

Schat's (Aaron and Shea) are famous in Bishop and Mammoth Lakes---genius entrepreneurs here. Mammoth Lakes is known for world class skiing on par with (Vienna) and welcomes "Friends of Dorothy."

Loads of sweets and warm rolls perfect on a snowy day. Did not try coffee here. Say hi to Aaron in Bishop---bbq is wow---and salad offerings were interesting.

Mammoth Rock Brasserie

Mammoth Rock Brasserie is our French inspired restaurant upstairs at Mammoth Rock 'n' Bowl. The restaurant has incredible views, with beautiful food and menu created by Chef Frederic Pierrel. There is additional seating on the outdoor deck for beautiful sunny days. We also offer a private chef's room just off the kitchen for extra special treatment. We do not offer a children's menu and expect any children in the restaurant to be well behaved, to stay in their seats and to keep their voices to a normal speaking level.

Burgers Restaurant

Reviewed By kkingmd - San Antonio, Texas

I dropped in here on our last day for a quick lunch. We were quickly and courteously seated and provided the menu. The fair is typical for burger place: burgers, salads and a few other sandwiches. We placed our order for 1/4 pound burger and rather quickly our food was in front of us. Everything was well presented and well prepared. The burgers were cooked perfectly and that he produce fresh and crisp. The taste was excellent.

Our server made sure our glasses never went dry and she frequently checked in to see if we needed anything. All in all a terrific place to have a meal.

Reviewed By Constance M - Long Beach, California

The restaurant has been there since 1959. Some of the menu items are stuck in the 70s, e.g. Beef Wellington and Bananas Foster. It's a rustic setting. Our table had a window overlooking a campsite with kids running around.

We started off with the Burgundy Escargot, failing to notice they came encroute. However, the pastry was tender and flaky, the escargot had a hint of garlic butter. We love the classic escargot swimming in garlic parsley butter where you can dip your French bread into it. This wasn't bad, just not our preference.

Next we had the Field Greens salad with smoke bacon and pickled vegetable relish. I didn't like it, too tart. The pickled vegetables over powered everything.

For the entree we had the short ribs. They were tender but very fatty with gristle.

It seemed like everything just missed. We wouldn't go back.
