The chef, he excels in creating dishes and cooking the most wonderful Italian food there is.Award winning cuisine. Estrellon is an upscale tapas restaurant. It does have commendable ambiance, and many of its small plates are wonderful. Others, not so much. It's hard to predict ahead of time, unfortunately. There is a broad selection of dishes; so, one way to simplify is the chef's "tasting menu" at $90 for two. Half of our party of 4 choice this option. It's primary feature was paella, a truly wonderful dish when done well. Alas, ours was not so well--the bottom was burned and that burned flavor penetrated the whole thing. The class thing to do would have been to pull out the shrimp (which were fine by themselves) and recook the rest rather than serve a second-rate effort.Among the sides ordered by others in our party, the vichyssoise stands out. The wine list is heavy on unfamiliar Spanish labels. They are a risk. We ordered a riojas from the middle of the range of prices. It was okay, but, even adjusting for the usual restaurant markup over retail charges, the wine did not measure up to its price tag.The wait staff is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and charming. As a social occasion, we had a great time, but long-run success, charging top dollar, isn't compatible with avoidable let downs and tepid after dinner coffee.Hi Murphy, Thank you for the feedback, we appreciate it all. I don't think this place has changed since I went to school at UW... and that's fantastic. It's like eating a nice Mediterranean meal in someone's kitchen. The staff is super friendly and the space is interesting. It's unique at this point on State Street... but that makes it worth stopping by. My wife and I went for the Shwarma plates... chicken for her, lamb for me. They came with rice, salad, hummus, and pitas. All of it was tasty. A perfect amount of food for lunch.Only two minor knocks... First, it's cash-only. It's 2017... have to accept credit cards. Second, I would like to see a few more spices/ingredients... the simplicity makes the Mediterranean Cafe accessible to everyone but also limits the ability to customize. Perhaps this is an Americanized take but something I've seen at Mediterranean places in Chicago.Definitely stop by while on State Street... it's great to eat there or to take it over to the Terrace should the weather cooperate.
