Mackinac Island Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Mackinac Island

April 15, 2018 Marlin Saiz

Charming Mackinac Island is a throwback to old-timey seaside leisure, from the candy-colored facades of downtown shops to the impressive (record-breaking, in fact) front porch of the Victorian-era Grand Hotel. Mackinac is world-famous for its homemade fudge, available in every flavor you can imagine. Work off your sugar high with a round of golf, a bike ride along a seaside trail, or exploring the limestone bluffs of Mackinac Island State Park.

The wife and I enjoyed a couple of burgers that were cooked to perfection. Seating is very limited in this establishment and you might have to come back and check for seating as there really isn't a place to stand while you wait. Excellent service as well.

Doud's Market

We arrived on Mackinac around noon and decided to get something for a picnic lunch. We discovered Doud’s Market at the east end of the main street. The market has a salad bar, a small Chinese buffet, and a variety of pre-made salads and sandwiches. You can also have a specialty sandwich made, which I did. I had the Italian sandwich, which was fabulous. The salad bar was wonderful. We biked around the Island and found a nice place for our picnic. Although the main town was busy, but the further we biked the less crowded it became.

We wanted to try The Woods for our splurge meal while staying on Mackinac for the week, and it did not disappoint. You will have to take a taxi, unless you are staying at Stonecliffe (or if you can ride your bike wearing dress clothes). Patrons we wearing anything from suitcoats and dresses to dressy jeans and a nice top. The interior is stunning, with very unique colors and decor. I like that the dining room has seating on multiple levels and in a few nooks. You are treated well while at The Woods, from having your napkin placed on your lap for you, to offering a taste of the bottle of wine to see if it meets your expectations. The food quality was superb in the dinners and desserts we ordered (2 orders of Duck, Whitefish, Pecan Ball, Flourless Chocolate Cake, Vanilla Bean Doughnut). Our wine was delightful, and my husband said the Long Island they made him was the "best he's ever had." We didn't feel rushed at all while eating. You can take a taxi OR pick up the shuttle specifically for The Woods. We didn't wait long after finishing dinner in order to pick up the shuttle back to downtown. Although The Woods is a splurge for us, I do want to eat there again. For the quality of food & service, I feel the prices were not astronomical.

We visited the Hotel Iroquois for our 40th wedding anniversary and dined our first evening at the Carriage House, mostly for the convenience. It was so good that we returned the following evening. It was late in the season, so several menu items were not available, but we got the last servings of lobster tail and it was delish. The lemon meringue pie was spectacular. The view of the waterfront, food and service quality, and historic ambiance all combined for a wonderful experience.

Cawthorne's Village Inn

For 37 years, Cawthorne's Village Inn has been a favorite Mackinac Island destination of locals and tourists alike. In fact, it has consistently been voted one of northern Michigans best restaurants! A half block off Main Street, on Hoban Street and straight up from Shepler's Ferry Dock, sits “the VI,” where summer visitors can dine on the outdoor patio and watch a passing parade of horses, carriages, bikes and walkers. Originally opened as the Village Inn in 1981, diners enter below a hanging sign announcing its house specialty, Planked Whitefish, which has garnered international acclaim. We also feature other Great Lakes fish, fresh from waters in and near the straits of Mackinac. Inside, enjoy your favorite sporting event on the indoor televisions and take your chance at Keno and pull tabs. You can also enjoy live musical entertainment on select evenings and seasonal bar specials.
