White Waters

This is a hotel or rooms with a restaurant attached in the centre of Machico in Madeira situated on the little roundabout with a Fountain in the middle.

Like others, we went to Machico for the day prior to our evening flight home. We are at the White Waters because my husband wanted to check it out in case we return and stay in Machico. Our overall impression was of a modern, light, clean and bright hotel. The restaurant fronts onto a busy little road, and they had the patio doors open, so there was noise from the passing traffic, but it did not detract from the ambience, which was relaxed. We had lunch there and our meals (one 'catch of the day' and one medallion with cheese and Madeira wine) were simple but well cooked. The veg were good and my rice was done perfectly - no stickiness. We had beer because we were possibly driving after the flight and wine might have been too much. We liked what we saw (their toilets were the cleanest we found anywhere) and are considering a stay here when we next return to Madeira.

Not really knowing what was what on our first night out here this restaurant was nice and easy to find being on the Seafront. We thoroughly enjoyed the garlic butter on traditional bread to start and then had lovely meals of Lasagne and Grilled Squid. Would recommend this restaurant.

Arrived here at about 12.45 and were sat down quickly. After about 20 mins I started to wonder how long is long enough to wait to be asked what we wanted to drink let alone what we wanted to eat.
After 30 mins I went into the bar and ordered some drinks
Then waited another 20 minutes for a large bottle of water and soft drinks.
Eventually the drinks arrived, and our order was taken.
By now nearly 45 mins passed. All while local people are being served drinks and food who arrived after us!
Then after another half hour, we were told that the gas had gone in kitchen and no food would be out for at least half an hour!
If we had been served as quickly as the locals we would have been out by now.
paid for drinks and left. Went to a nice little place next door call O Gala, which was excellent and much cheaper and far more friendly and attentive.

The traditional beef skewer is wonderful, comes hanging on a huge skewer with plenty of accompaniments and has loads of flavour. There’s a good selection of reasonably priced wines too. The dessert menu didn’t look exciting compared to neighbouring restaurants but I was too full...MoreMuito obrigado! Pela sua avaliação

O Goncalves

Reviewed By pollyposhpup - Birmingham, UK

Passing by this restaurant on our way to the village centre, we promised ourselves we would visit before we left. In fact what we should have done is try this first, but then we probably wouldn't have gone anywhere else.....Our host, Goncalves was attentive and was generous with his advice regarding the menu which was much appreciated. The usual olives etc arrived at our table without asking. The wine was chilled to perfection and our meals arrived in good time. Our plates were overflowing and I struggled to finish, but I did...... This was probably the only restaurant that offered anything other than the typical menu. As I said, we left there on our last night thinking 'Why didn't we go there at the start of our 2 weeks'. Yummy.

We think this is the best restaurant in Madeira. Lily herself warmly welcomes you; the menu is interesting and varied, the food is great and the prices are good. We particularly like the roast lamb on Sundays! O Piquinho Restaurante & Churrascaria

We had a wonderful dinner here on Good Friday, a day when locals were eating fish and so the place was empty but for one other tourist couple. We were extremely well looked after by the friendly Joseph (who is ex cruise industry) and his kitchen staff, who were together nailed the art of being helpful without hovering.
My companion chose the recommended Madeira meat speciality which is a succulent espetada, which seems to be made of large chunks of beef rubbed in garlic and salt and possibly other spices. It was served hanging from a frame which was fixed to the table and it was absolutely delicious. I was in a mood for steak as well, so I tried another option. I'm not altogether sure what it was called - something like 'steak cup' in the English menu, which didn't make much sense to me. It's really fun - they bring the grilled meat to you on a skewer and slice it over your plate. You take a pair of tongs on the table and lift the meat to your plate as they slice it - it's up to you how rare you like your slices to be. Back the meat goes to the grill and they bring it back when it's sufficiently cooked, and so it goes until either you've eaten every last morsel or they take pity on you! I had black beans, salad and fries as sides and I was absolutely chocka full by the end of the evening. The whole bill for the two of us, including mains with sides and a large beer each was less than 35 euros - we didn't have room for desert and I'm glad we didn't go all out on the starters either!
The restaurant enjoys great views over the town as it's got a lovely hilltop location, so try and get a window seat if you can.
The only downside is that it's a bit scary walking up to the restaurant from town. The footpath disappears halfway up and there are loooots of dogs in the houses up the street which go beserk as you walk past - though they can't reach you. If you can handle the Barking and dodging the traffic, you'll make it alive, don't worry, give it a try. But for a more relaxing start to your evening it's probably worth taking a taxi for around 6 euros up to the restaurant from town.

We decided to try "MareAlta" taking into consideration its good location by the oceanfront. It is predominantly seafood but offers also some vegetarian and meat dishes. My wife had a vegetable soup and roast potatoes and my son loved his pepper steak. I opted for the seafood, simple and really delicious octopus "Polvo Lagareiro". Prices are reasonable for the food and its location, maybe a bit higher, ambience is nothing special and service was, say, indifferent - neither slow, nor fast but not to complain about.
The views are good but they are so everywhere on Madeira :)!
Sometimes, if it gets too hot, they keep both doors open and your table might be in the air draft.

Looks very unassuming but the food is very good and I went back a few times for lunch or a light dinner. Particularly recommend the scabbard fish Sandwich (great option if you’re not keen on the usual fruit combination). Very well priced wine and desserts too. The chocolate cake (kind of torte slice) was great.
