Uneven service

Clarion is somewhat more expensive compared to other hotels nearby. But they are located in the city centre which is a plus and the only one offering an evening meal. They also take pets for a fee of 250 kroner. My first night there had a delicious evening meal of chicken with a rich choice of salads and soup. The second night had a very hohum vegetarian lasagne and vegetable soup. The pet room cannot be used to compare the other accomodations, but as a pet room there is room for improvement. No water cooker for us humans to make coffee or tea and no fridge for refreshments. And a pet room should with no expense to Clarion be able to provide a water bowl for animals. However, the pet rooms are close to parking and an exit for walks. The tv was excellent and there were charging outlets for phones. The beds were comfortable and the room quiet for the most part. All in all Clarion provides a nice stay for singles and couples.

From room beautiful wiev ower lake and city. Breakfast was superb as you used to it in nordic countries generally. It was a plesant stay!

High recommendation especially when skiing in the area

Very well run, fairly new hotel in new part of Lillehammer train station. Staff couldn’t be nicer or more helpful. Rooms are simple but clean and comfortable and shower is quite functional. Breakfast is very good, and coffee and tea all day and night a nice touch. Only possible negative to be aware of is if you’re a noise sensitive sleeper, trains coming through might disturb you.

Good location

Reviewed By Wales_Solo_traveller

The hotel is very central to Lillehammar and the main shopping street which is where many bars and restaurants are. I was in a double room. The hotel is looking a bit dated, it is 3 star but could still probably do with some updating. There is one lift which was working, fortunately as there are 9 floors with a bar on the top floor. The doors operate with a key rather than a card, and you hand the key in when you leave, and pick it up on return. Rather old school. But the staff on reception could not have been more helpful, there was a problem with their payment system and my card and they sorted it out for me which was great. My room was fine, although there was no safe or iron in the room, nor was there a kettle. However you could make tea or coffee in the reception area. There was a hairdryer in the shower room. And the temperature was operated (I think!) from a switch near the bathroom door, operating from 1 to 10, and I am assuming 10 was the warmest. This operates a small radiator under the window. The curtains are quite thin and although the windows are double glazed there appeared to be a bit of a cold draft coming through but once i found out how to work the radiator, it was toasty warm. In the room is a double bed, armchair, table and chair and a small wardrobe with two shelves underneath for storage. There is also a large flat screen TV which had the standard Norwegian channels on along with Al Jazeera and Sky News. My main criticism is the WiFi, it was possible to see the WiFi in the room, although the service appeared sketchy, but no matter how hard I tried to connect I could not get past the log in page which is also the hotel’s web page exhorting me to book a stay at the hotel I was already staying at. The shower room was compact, and the water was hot and strong. The towels could do with being replaced with newer ones, but they were clean if a bit threadbare. And no floor towel was provided but the water escaped from the shower enclosure all over the bathroom floor so a floor towel would have been handy. My room rate included breakfast, which is served in the Egon restaurant on the ground floor. Egon is a Norwegian chain and my one experience with them to date was not happy, however the breakfast here was fine. This Egon restaurant is in quite an attractive historic (old mill) building, and the breakfast was standard hot or cold buffet options, including fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals, wonderful bread (which seems to be a feature of my breakfasts in Norway) as well as eggs, beans and sausages. If you are looking for reasonably priced place to stay in Lillehammar, convenient for the station and shops then this hotel is fine, and as mentioned the staff were incredibly helpful.

Excellent stay for cross country skiing and walking with warm and cosy atmosphere and lovely food

Reviewed By RagH2013

We are an older couple with one skier and one who is no longer able to ski. The combination of going out skiing in the morning and walking after lunch worked very well. The atmosphere in the hotel was warm and friendly and the home made food was excellent with many local dishes. After dinner there was live piano music in the cosy lounge with a log fire which we very much enjoyed. The ski hire was first class and with expert advice on waxing. The ski tracks were run up every few days with a machine and the tracks were in good condition. We have stayed at Venabu several times in the winter and also with a group in the summer. Excellent stay every time! We look forward to coming back.
