TBK Grill

We stopped for lunch at TBK Grill on our way home from an Apple class in Old Orchard. We had a taste for tacos. It is located on what probably could have been a little triangular park, but it is a restaurant at the intersections of Howard St., Lincoln Ave. & Skokie Blvd. Our order taker was our server and she was very nice and friendly. This TBK Grill is also associated with the Taco Burrito King chain of Mexican restaurants. For the amount of seating, there is more than enough parking. We ordered the taco plate special which consisted of a carne asada and a pollo (chicken) taco with rice and beans, and a soda. We also ordered an extra ground beef taco. I didn't like the chicken taco, or at least, I didn't like the chicken, as I thought that the chicken was a bit dry on the edges. For what we ordered, it was reasonably priced.

Mom's Old Recipe

On one of our relatively frequent trips to Chicago, we enjoyed our meal here more than ever. Chips, a delicious, slightly spicy sauce, and pickled vegetables were served first. Both of us ordered the green chile enchiladas. A vegetarian can order either a cheese filling or a vegetable filling (potatoes and carrots). It's topped with lots of cilantro and chopped lettuce greens. You can ask to hold the drizzled sour cream. Service is excellent and friendly.

Taste of Cuba

To observe the raising of the U.S. flag in Havana, we decided to check out this little storefront Cuban joint. It's in the odd commercial strip which also houses Renga-Tei & Wholly Frijoles. Parking can be a challenge...we went to a residential street a block north..Taste of Cuba is long and narrow - 8 or 9 tables - with an open kitchen, and fun Cuban artwork and posters. Pleasant lighting, high ceilings. When you walk in, you're greeted by a roll of toilet paper with Fidel's face on it. Heh. We decided not to talk politics. The Yuca Frita was yummy, perfectly fried with a hint of lemon & garlic. The tostones & maduros were both tasty. They were out of white rice, but the saffron rice with gandules was perfect. Our entrees were OK, but lacked zip. Decent-sized portions. Friendly but slow service. It's BYOB and it closes early.

Yolo Mexican Eatery

Reviewed By arriveanddepart

Spotted this little restaurant when visiting the yoga studio across the street. Read the menu in the window and was impressed by the sophistication of the offerings. It didn't take long to persuade my husband to stop in for a meal on a Saturday night. We were lucky to get a table for two without a reservation, as the place holds only seven tables and three more outdoors. Would recommend making a reservation. We extremely enjoyed our choices of mushroom tacos and chicken mole tacos. The mole was deep, earthy and not sweet as many other places seem to favor. My entree of Camarones Ixtapa, a shrimp dish, was good, but not as good as the tacos. The side of beans my husband ordered were pretty straight forward. Not sure if Yolo's tortillas are home made, but they sure tasted like it. And so wonderfully fresh. My husband is Mexican-American and really loved the food overall here, as did I. Tasteful decor. Special place to bring an out-of-town guest. By the way, Yolo is short for the native Mexican language (Nahautl) word "Yolotl," meaning "heart."

Taste of Peru

Reviewed By theoccasionaltourist

This is a small place but full of flavor. Few dine-inners but a busy takeout parade throughout the dinner hour. Never had Peruvian food before but our whole meal was wonderful. Shishkabob appetizers were good—delicious but not spicy seasoning on both the chicken and beef but the chicken was better and the beef overdone. Paella was also excellently flavorful with plenty of seafood, just overkill on the calamari. Other things we tried were equally tasty but I forget what they are called. Sauced boiled eggs and potatoes, husk-free tamale-like innerds with chicken and the ceviche were surprisingly light and tasty. Ended with a mango ice cream that was also refreshing and not too sweet. Large portions. Pleasant staff. Will definitely visit again to try some other entrees.

90 Miles Cuban Cafe

We provide Live entertainment Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays.

90 Miles Cuban Cafe is just next to the main entrance to the Lincolnwood Town Center. There are entrances from the parking lot and the interior of the mall. One very nice thing about this mall restaurant is that it has its own restrooms which were clean and well-kept. We ordered tostones rellenos as an appetizer, as well as a pork tamal, for the four of us to share. For entrees, we ordered a ropa vieja and a frita Cubana. Though they are unable to prepare the frita Cubana to a medium rare (because of the chorizo), they were nice enough to keep it just south of well done. The plantains were perfectly done. Our server, Jocelyne A., was friendly and efficient. The prices are reasonable. There is plenty of parking available.

We decided on Mexican cuisine for lunch and chose Wholly Frijoles which is east of Pulaski Rd. on Touhy Ave. There is parking behind the store, as well. We were seated quickly, and, I think we were lucky, as we were just before lunch. Chips and salsa were brought to the table and Ricky took our drink order. After going over the menus, we decided on enchiladas, as well as the pechuga pollo de rellena which were two stuffed chicken breasts. The order was brought quickly and the food was really, really good. The chicken was moist and I loved the stuffed part. Ricky, our server, was personable and attentive and very efficient. A good choice, if you like good Mexican cuisine.

My husband and I visited Libertad after a show at Skokie theater for a late dinner. We were so glad that we found this gem! Welcoming and friendly staff that still believes in customers service. The food was perfectly flavored and the presentation was excellent. The quality of the food was definitely fine dining but in a casual atmosphere. Loved it! Thanks Libertad for an excellent experience!
