June 20, 2020 Karren Gelb

Find out what Cafe restaurants to try in Honolulu. The mere mention of Hawaii is enough to prompt visions of grass skirts and colorful cocktails with tiny umbrellas. While you will find some kitsch in Honolulu, you’ll also find art museums, bike paths, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Popular Waikiki Beach has soft sands and great surf. For majestic Oahu views scramble to the top of Diamond Head – a 350-acre volcanic crater. Historic structures like Iolani Palace and Ali'iolani Hale are worth a visit on a non-beach day.

We wanted to try something fresh and local for breakfast and heard good things about Goofy Cafe & Dine. It was conveniently located just a half block from our hotel property (Hilton Waikiki Village). There was a short wait (about 30 mins) but with an ABC store next store the time flew by. But don’t be late for your name being called, they don’t call you twice . I enjoyed local farm eggs omelette with the fresh English muffins ( English muffins were the best!), hubby had the Loco Moco. The food tasted amazing, sadly the coffee was weak. Not sure if that was the regular brew, but it was lack luster at best.

This is the third year in a row that we have come back to this amazing restaurant during summer vacation. It first got our attention because of their unique feature of ube pancakes. I’m a sucker for anything ube (ube ice cream, ube cake, ube halaya I’m there!) so of course I needed to try this restaurant. One bite and I was in love. Why has no one thought of ube pancakes before? I was hooked. It does not stop there though. My son unfortunately has several food allergies (peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg). He got to eat the Simple Breakfast Combo which is not simple in any way as it is served with rice or potatoes with spam, bacon and Portuguese sausage. They separated the bread and 2 eggs that comes with the order and we got to eat them. So they are pretty good with those with food allergies.Hubby got kimchi fried rice (2 years in a row) and daughter got loco moco (2 years in a row) and of course I got ube pancakes 3 years in a row. Will be coming back again and again!

I saw their reviews and knee I was going to find out. I know if I didn't know I was looking for it , I would have passed it. It's definitely a hidden gem, but well worth it. So, to find it's location you won't forget it. Parking ..........im not sure because I parked and walked to it a few blocks away. I must say it's one of the best acai bowls I've had. Their ingredients were all really fresh and the creation was done beautifully. I also on a whim tried the cheese bread ........ was I surprised. Melt in you mouth goodness, so good my daughter went back for more. I'm glad I tried them. I was vacationing so I hate to say I can't make this a routine stop, but when I return it's definitely on my list of must haves.

Came here for our last meal before leaving Oahu. Small, unassuming place which made it hard to find. I could be wrong, but we didnt see any signs except for a small one on the front door. We got here around 9am on a Monday and the place was beginning to fill up. I got the loco moco, which was tasty but not any different from any other loco moco I've had. The crispy rice on the bottom of the skillet was a nice touch though. The gf and the kid shared the bibimbap, which they enjoyed. We noticed the portions were a bit on the small side. 2 entrees and 1 guava juice for close to 40 dollars. Service was decent, nothing special. There is a parking lot with metered parking.

$40 for breakfast for two seems pricey, even for outside of Waikiki. No question that the food was good. I had the meatloaf loco moco with fried rice (+$2.00). Spouse had an omelet with two types of meat and cheese. Salsa was extra. Service was a bit spotty on a Tuesday morning. It's been better there. But it is a popular choice for breakfast and there was a wait. Good food, usually great service but don't expect cheap eats.
