Birger is an excellent beer restaurant with (mostly) knowledgeable staff. Any recommendations by the younger bartenders tend to be spot on. They also serve some snacks which is nice and really rare in Finnish pubs.
The pub is a bit more upscale and mostly visited by the more well-off people of the city.

We were surprised to find out that the very popular pizzeria (or italian restaurant) in Hämeenlinna does use emmental cheese in their pizzas. To me THE pizza cheese is mozzarella. These emmental pizzas were strange (structure and taste) and not "right" ones. Actually too creasy.
Free salad buffet was very tasty with large variety of ingredients. Bread also good. Hostess is quite strict and not specially friendly, rest of the staff ok.
Restaurant is often crowded (our third visit, first and last with pizzas). Still wondering the cheese choice in pizzas...

Restaurant Piparkakkutalo, "The Gingerbread House", is a traditional, popular and cosy restaurant at the heart of Hameenlinna next to the main church and the marketplace. The restaurant offers traditional European food with specialities and seasonal local ingredients. Restaurant Piparkakkutalo is located in a historical house. The house was built in 1906-07 as a home for merchant August Skogster whose department store was located next to the house. The house is designed by one of the most famous Finnish architect of that time, Selim A. Lindqvist. The house is a Jugend style building. Restaurant Piparkakkutalo is ideal for all kinds of lunch and dinner occasions, informal or formal. There are also dining cabinets and meeting cabinets available for private occasions. There is a cosy pub, Albertin Kellari, located in the basement of the Restaurant. The pub is fully licensed with a wide selection of beers, ciders and other drinks. Also a selection of tasty bar snacks is available. There is live music every week ranging from jazz to blues, roots etc. Also quiz and theme nights are organized regularly.

We needed something quick for a late lunch, and the restaurant provided for that - but it was no culinary feast. I have not been to any other Thai restaurants in Finland, but compared to what I have had elsewhere, this was at best mediocre food. Portions were big, however. There is an English menu.

I had once again dinner at Vanajanlinna. Service minded staff and quality regarding the food is always excellent. Menu itself is not very wide, but very tasty. Atmosphere at Vanajanlinna reminds from old elegant Castles.

On a day visit to Hämeenlinna we dropped into Cafe Laurell for coffee and cakes. So pleased we did. The place has a real high quality feel to it and I feared the prices would reflect the high standards. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover it is a very reasonably priced cafe. Service was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Definitely on our list of 'must go again'!

Surprisingly, the best pizza in the country comes from Hämeenlinna. Forget pizza bolognese and ham&pineapple, Hällä's menu offers so much more! Salad buffet and warm and delicious flat bread is included. When visiting Aulanko spa or driving from Helsinki to Tampere, do stop here. You won't be disappointed.

Portions are big and greasy. "Everything" is deep-fried and/or served with dip sauce. If you try to find something healthy to eat, don't come here. If you want to get a LOT of salty, juicy, greasy, deep-fried stuff, this is definitely your place.

Great service and super amazing food. I think, they did great job selecting the best quality ingredients and spices. We end of going there few times and we all were very impressed with their consistency on the food and Atmosphere. Staffs were always around willing to exchange some kind and friendly words with all their customers. Excellent environment!
