Located on the highway to Limón. A pleasant atmosphere. Clean restaurant. Popular for locals. Ideal for breakfast or lunch. There are several options of natural juices, fruits and beverages. They serve a large buffet with many options of typical food of Costa Rica. Good prices. Recommended.

Marisqueria Mar Azul

Reviewed By Megan W - West Saint Paul, Minnesota

La Marisqueria Mar Azul has a very casual atmosphere with few embellishments, but the food is amazing and a great value. It's very popular with the locals. I would definitely recommend the patacones con guacamole!! I split the rice with shrimp plate with a friend and it was more than enough for both of us. Not a tourist spot at all - but that's part of the appeal.

Rancho Roberto's

The breakfast buffet closed too early, they stop serving at 9:00. I think they should consider pushing it at least 30 more minutes, because there is heavy traffic going out of San Jose in the early morning. On the other hand, they have quick service, and their french toast was really good.

Marisqueria la Trocha

La Trocha is built like a pirate ship. It’s no surprise seafood is a specialty. Aaron loved his mariscada en salsa jalapena, 5950 colones. I enjoyed the casado vegetarian--especially the potato salad, 3400. Our total bill including a Diet Coke and Tropical Te Verde was 11,350 colones, or about $21.21.

Restaurante El Fogon de Lola

There are many traditional open kitchen fog (wood fired) in Costa Rica, but El Fogon de Lola is the very best, with a wide selection of typical food at very affordable prices. Perfect for a stop between San José and the Caribbean. Service is friendly and rather quick. In many occasions, the owner passes by the tables and offers additional gallo pinto.

Valverd's

Reviewed By Dawn E - Madison, Wisconsin

We were on a road trip from the north rain forest to the south and there was a lot of construction along the way. We stopped at Valverd’s mostly because we were done with the road construction and there was a long line of cars. What a find. We split the Casado fajitas de pollo 4200 (about $8), it was enough of us. It was a very nice restaurant and I would stop there again. The wait staff was a little slow but the food was great and I’m glad we stopped.
