O Vasilis

This is a really picturesque family run taverna based by a church in the centre of the village of Melanes. We visited on the strength of the earlier reviews. We received a warm welcome from one of the owner’s children and ordered the braised lamb in lemon and one of the speciality pork dishes with eggplant. Our food was decidedly average and due to the speed it was served, certainly not freshly prepared. The lamb was a tasteless shank served with chips and the pork was not particularly flavoursome. We were offered complimentary dessert which comprised some fruit and orange cake. Yes, the setting is beautiful and very authentic and the service was good but the food simply didn’t live up to expectations and frankly we failed to see what all the hype was about from the earlier reviews. Maybe we visited on an off night.Το οτι ήρθε γρήγορα το φαγητο σας δεν νομίζω να σημενει πως δεν είναι καλο η πρόσφατα προετοιμασμένο, ισα ισα που δείχνει ότι το φαγητά είναι φρέσκο και ζεστο και ερχετε στο τραπέζι σας χωρίς ξαναζεσταμα άμεσα και γρήγορα.

A mix of modern and traditional. The local sausages a must.We were a party of 14.Excellent quality throughout, hugely generous 'on the house'additions and the attention lavished on the younger children deserved medals.Well worth travelling from any part of the island specifically to get to.Just 'popped' (it was 30mins from Naxos town by hire car) back for a coffee. Welcomed back like an old friend and had a wonderful iced frappe. Go.

Scholarcheio

I've been coming to Naxos for 20 years. My husband and I found Scholarcheio during a rain storm. There are a few tavernas on the same side as Scholareio so it's difficult to pick one...but we picked Scholarcheio and we are so happy we did! Yourgos is a fantastic chef and he only presents fresh dishes. On top of that he is super kind. We found Scholarcheio about 7 years ago and now we stop there every time we are in Filoti. Location is right across from the bus stop. The food is great and the local hospitality is like no other. I saw some weird reviews here..but like I said there are a few tavernas right next to this one so I'm thinking there might be tough competitors. Scholareio is great!

To Palio Sinema

Reviewed By 632valerieb

The Old Cinema is located a few steps up from the centre of Filoti towards the beautiful Panagia Filotitissa. The setting is outstanding, with split level terraces constructed on marble and stone walls, and α view up through Cypress trees and wooded slopes to the mountain road as it approaches Apeiranthos. As well as the charm of the outside areas, the interior is a gloriously proportioned space with the typical oak beamed ceiling some five or more metres high. We visited out of season in early April when the locals gather just for coffee, and caught them a little unawares by asking for food. We were given the region’s usual superb quality Greek salad, beautifully cooked local sausage in a tomato sauce and delicious spinach patties. However I can’t yet vouch for the food generally, as I think we may have inadvertently imposed ourselves on the family’s own lunch for that day. Their only wine from the barrel was the organic amber variety, pleasant but a little heavy for some Northern European tastes. However, the very friendly and engaging proprietor, who speaks some English and very clear Greek (a bonus if, like me, you are struggling to learn the language), assured me that she stocks the softer white barrel wine during the tourist season. The quality of food in Naxos generally, and Filoti in particular, is exceptionally high and its vibrant lunchtime trade is likely to extend into the evenings as tourists, attracted to the region for its spectacular hiking routes and wealth of cultural and historical sites, seek to extend their stay. For the beauty of its building and location alone The Old Cinema is one of the dozen or so excellent eateries that contribute so richly to the village’s increasingly bright future as a centre for tourism in the island’s breathtaking mountainous interior.

We enjoyed a lovely lunch here during our visit to Apiranthos. The restaurant has a terrace which offers incredible views across to the mountains and the local scenery. The staff seemed quite harassed and were not so attentive. We enjoyed a Greek salad and tzatziki with wine and a Pilsner. The food was very reasonably priced and the restaurant seemed popular with the Greeks as well as tourists. Highly recommended.

Duetto restaurant is the ideal place in Filoti village to sit and enjoy a delicious meal. Eating your dinner under the perfect shade provided by the trees is a unique experience that you shouldn't miss. It is situated in the center of the village so as you eat you can contemplate the picturesque buildings, watch the local people walk around and communicate with each other. An unforgettably serene and calm scenery.

Likouris Tavern

Reviewed By Gypsy1967

* Firstly, apologies for lateness in posting review! *Without doubt, Filoti is my most favourite village on the entire of Naxos island. Located just 18km from Naxos, the island's capital, the setting is just gorgeous - a traditional Cycladic village built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Zas. The approach to the village is truly a spectacular sight - abundant olive trees grow in the fields and the white-washed flat roof buildings make a splendid backdrop in the distance. The main street of Filoti, the centre of village life, is heavily treed (providing lots of shade and reprieve from the scorching Mediterranean sun) and pretty flower boxes adorn the pavement (the shopkeepers have a lot of pride in the appearance of their village). As the village is elevated, it offers wonderful views of Naxos island. This isn't a review about Filoti, so I will move on to Lykouris Taverna - but I wanted to paint a picture of Filoti, so you realise that travelling 18km from Naxos is well worth it - after all there are plenty of restaurants in Naxos, but venture out and you will not regret it. It will be a double win for you - the most DELICIOUS food on the entire island, and the opportunity to visit a gorgeous, quaint, traditional village as a bonus. Now for the food - we'd hired a scooter and explored inland, and the north-eastern beaches for the day. Since we were so impressed with Filoti, we promised ourselves that on the way back to Naxos, we would eat dinner in the village. We drove up and down the main street a couple of times, before choosing Lykouris Taverna (it's located at the quite end, not the busy end near the corner as you first approach the village, if coming from Naxos). Boy-o-boy, it would have to be one of the best decisions we made all trip! The food was absolutely DELICIOUS - so much so that we made a special trip back to Filoti the following night, to again eat at Lykouris Taverna. We weren't disappointed second time round either - it was just as good, if not better! It's a family run business (the owners having lived abroad for a number of years - if I'm remembering correctly, I think it was Canada) - the husband is the chef, and the wife does the front-of-house. She has bucket loads of personality and charm, and speaks very good English. We truly felt like we were dining as friends of the family. On the second night when we returned we were welcomed with beaming smiles - and insistence that we park our scooter as close as we possibly could to the restaurant entrance, so that we didn't have to walk far (so sweet!). The menu isn't large - which is a good thing - the world's best chefs often say 'less is best' - and whilst we didn't try everything on the menu (wish I'd had the time to!), I'm confident in saying that no matter what you order, it will be DELICIOUS. There are enough choices (traditional Greek food and wood-fired pizzas) to satisfy all tastes. We ordered traditional Greek food both nights, but we did see pizzas being served to other diners and they looked amazing! What we ordered, and highly recommend, is the Bread (rustic, crusty and served warm - substantive like a sourdough - I think it may be Greek Psomi) and Greek Tzatziki (drizzled with glistening extra virgin olive oil and garnished with plump kalamata olives) Greek Salad (so fresh and delicious), Saganaki (bubbling fried cheese with a perfect golden crust, served with zesty lemon), Stuffed Grilled Peppers (these were DIVINE - I was expecting them to be stuffed with a rice mix, however when we cut into them they were filled with a lovely soft, delicate but tasty, cheese - YUMMMM!) and Chicken Kebab (absolutely AMAZING - so much so that we ordered it the next night too!) - succulent chicken char-grilled to absolute perfection - as were the vegetables (red onion, tomato, peppers (or capsicums as they're called in Australia)) - served with superb hand-cut golden, crunchy chips (fries) and a generous side salad, drizzled with a yoghurt based white sauce and oregano - oh and not forget the fabulously fresh and juicy lemon that was served on the plate. Quite possibly the best Chicken Kebab I have EVER had - truely! We found the portions to be very generous, and also exceptional value for money.Do yourself a favour and eat here! Your visit to Naxos (and Filoti) will be all the more memorable for having done so.
