Lon Cafe Enoshima Honten

Reviewed By Botayone - Tokyo, Japan

While Lon Café boasts being the first French toast specialty café in Japan, plenty of later incarnations beats the original both in terms of the taste and the value.
Our party of four adults each ordered a different item from the menu. About 1200 yen gets you a surprisingly small, circular piece of French toast with your choice of coffee/tea on the side. Via the eye test, it seemed easily under four inches across.
Because the toast was paired with ice cream, I felt pressure to finish the toast as fast as possible. With each passing moment, the ice cream would melt into the French toast - making it undesirably soggy. At 1200 yen, I didn't want to feel rushed!
There are so many better options in the greater Tokyo area if you are craving French toast. Mercer Brunch in Roppongi and L'atelier Cocco in Mita are just two places I've recently had much better versions than what's offered at Lon Café.
I recommend giving Lon Café a miss when visiting Enoshima.

Casual dining from Sydney. Their popular menu includes scrambled eggs, ricotta hotcakes and dishes with fresh ingredients, which are appreciated as the "Best Breakfast in the World" created by Bill Granger. You definitely have to wait in line, but you can make a reservation for dinner.

☆Scranbled organic eggs with toast

☆Ricotta hotcakes, fresh banana and honeycomb butter

☆Sweet corn fritters, roast tomato, spinash and becon with avocado salsa

One of my favourite places to visit during the summer. Especially if you're seeking respite from the noise and dust of the city.
It's about an hour and a half from Tokyo city by Express Train (red) on the Odakyu Line. Less if you take the Rapid Express (orange).
The layout of the area is not complicated and you can easily Google for maps showcasing the handful of highlights - the shrine, aquarium, spa.

What you really need to do however is to just walk around - slowly - and soak in the atmosphere. During the summer, the black sand Beaches are packed with groups and families all laid out on mats and deck chairs, beer and snacks all around. The quintessential summer activity.
Personally, I'd head towards the shrine up the hill, past the rows of shops selling local specialties like しらすor baby sardines, rice crackers, Japanese sweets and kitschy souvenir t-shirts. At the top of the steps, turn right and follow the path up the hill and keep walking. Past the second shrine, the traditional Japanese wagashi (sweet) shop, past all the restaurants till you get to the other side of the cliffs. And be surprised. :)
On the way back, stop by the second restaurant after the flight of steps back up. The restaurants there all sell pretty much the same thing but this one had the best view and location in my opinion. All the times I've been there, I've been lucky enough to get a seat outside overlooking the cliffs. A perfect, perfect way to top a summer excursion to Enoshima. Literally. :)))

It's in front of a school.
So, I had expected cheap and heavy meal here.
I was wrong.
More of tasty cutlets restaurant.
It's not cheap, rather expensive.
But, it's worth it.
The staff there look like ordinary uncles and aunts.
Probably they just continue ordinary things for their guests.
But, if you continue ordinary things for decades, it becomes special.
Good unexpected surprise.
Nice!

This is the original Sangosho restaurant (honten) that started the whole franchise.
My wife and I have been fans of their boil in the bag 'Dry Curry' for a few years now but had never visited the place.
Finally the real thing!
We were very lucky, as it was 14:30 on a wednesday that we visited.
Empty car park and empty seats.
I hear there's a big queue during peak times.
Although we both had to have our dry curries, their popular dish is Beef Cutlet Curry.

Sangosho Moana Makai

Reviewed By Cathy T - Kamakura, Japan

Sangosho is located across from Shichirigahama beach and nearest to Shichirigahama Enoden station. The design of the restaurant is unmistakably Hawaiian and it is known for its large portions of curry. The anchovy spiced french fries are also tasty. This bigger of the two Sangosho restaurants is the second, the original is also in Shichirigahama, higher up on a hill in a quaint shopping plaza. They both have similar menu items. If you go for dinner or lunch on a nice day, you may have to wait in line - definitely have to wait on the weekends. The staff can be a hit and miss with rudeness. I have had extremes of both here, even on the same dining experience.
Know before you go
The restaurant has its own large parking lot
Doesn't seem as fancy as some of the other nearby restaurants with that Hawaiian look but still not ok with damp clothing or sandy feet.
If you have small kids,.some of the curry is rather spicy, check before you order.
The entrance is one level above the street at the top of a flight of stairs - not sure if they have an elevator hidden somewhere
