Yxtaholms Slott is a sprawling country estate built in 1753, set in one of the most beautiful settings I've ever seen in Sweden (though there are many beautiful ones). It is an island in the middle of a lake, making for a beautiful year-round setting. While we enjoyed our stay at the manor, the restaurant was disappointing.
As Yxtaholm is largely used for conferences, the tables in the dining area reflected that - big, long tables set for lots of people. The menu also reflected that - with a set menu of typical Swedish food. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the restaurant.
Breakfast - Typical Swedish buffet, with bread, butter, deli meats, boiled eggs, and cereal. Very unimpressive, but pretty well done for what it was. The eggs were boiled just right, and the smoked ham for the smörgås (open faced sandwiches) was really good. Coffee and Tea of course. Served from 7:00 to 9:00 on weekdays, 8:00 to 10:00 on weekends.
Lunch - Started with a really tasty Herring appetizer - not your typical Swedish "sill", but packed into a square with a really tasty sauce. Typical Swedish breads served. Main course was an oversized meatball, quite disappointing for the price we paid. Wine was typical super expensive Swedish prices, of course, but some good choices. Served from 12:00 to 1:30.
Dinner - Appetizer was a cube of raw salmon - kind of like sashimi, but without any sauces, rice, or anything else to give it taste - just the tasteless raw salmon and a couple sprigs of garnish. Main course was veal, served in typically uninspired Swedish preparation, sliced with gravy, overcooked, accompanied by roasted potatoes. Dessert was ice cream with walnuts which was fine. Served from 7:00 to 9:00 during the week and from 6:00 to 9:00 on Saturday.
Service was poor, once we got our food, we lost the waitress. We had to go around and pour our own wine for the group. When the waitress one time came in and saw us doing that, instead of taking over or apologizing, she grabbed a couple of dishes and left again without a word, never to be seen again.
There is a nice bar upstairs you can go to after dinner (open until 1:00 AM), and of course wandering the grounds after lunch is a special feeling.

I'm a big fan of "fika". To be able to sit down with a cup of coffee with different kinds of cookies, perhaps a cinnamon bun, is fantastic. Listen to the little pouring creek. Take your time at Ekenäs kvarn(mill). The staff is delightful and the "brödportion" is something that you just have to buy. Be sure to check the "open times" before you go there.

A great place for easy dining. We were bit after kitchen closure, but we're still well received. Food was very Swedish and good quality.
