New Brothers Restaurant & Deli

Reviewed By Enzalina - Boston, Massachusetts

So I have multiple food allergies and when I hear New Brothers served a pretty decent breakfast and the guys behind the counter were pretty cool, I decided to take my two besties and go. First of all never having been there, we were clueless as what to do. No signs, no one asking us if we needed help. We then figured out, it was a self service, grab your tray and order at the counter. When I asked the old guy about the oil he used, he got all defensive. I tried to explain to him that I had a severe allergy to soy and couldn't use soybean oil. I asked if he could use butter and finally after rolling his eyes at me he said he could use olive oil. I explained my other allergies and again he looked at me like I was wasting his time. My friend finally said, "if you don't understand you could end up calling 911 because she could have a reaction." I finally ordered an omelet which was dry and awful. I couldn't eat the hash browns and he didn't even bother to ask if there was another side I could eat. I ended up getting sick before I could make it home. Not worth and not a very customer service oriented place. Won't be returning!

I always try to find the local place when I travel and this was rated number one on Trip Advisor. It did not disappoint. Appeared to be nicely run family operation with outstanding customer service. I enjoyed some coffee while they prepared my Bacon, Ham, Mushroom and Onion Omelette. The Potatoes with my omelette were prepared just the way I like them, which is not always the case when I travel. Dark Rye Toast was delivered buttered nicely. Too much for me to finish, so I brought it home because it was too good to waste. Parking available in the strip mall parking lot. I would definitely visit when in the area again.

We've been here several times and have enjoyed dine in and take out, as well. Nice selection of sausage, beers, etc. for lunch.
Pates are very nice, as is slab bacon, many European regional sausages, and a good selection of Swedish and German delicaces which we brought to a friend.

Firenze Trattoria Salem

My husband and I had dinner at Firenze Trattoria last evening after visiting the nearby Peabody Essex Museum. The intimate setting was lovely. The service outstanding. And the food was superb. We shared a crostini appetizer (with four delicious toppings), for entrees my husband had the whole-fish branzino and I had the sumptuous linguini with cod, and we shared a bread pudding dessert. If you love Italian food, don't miss eating at Firenze Trattoria in Salem. Also, a great value! Our bill was less than $100!

We tried our 3 favorite dishes here, and were not disappointed. The yellow and green curries had the traditional vegetables in the sauces, the broth was well spiced with a pleasing zip, and the quantity provided a large amount to take home. The pad Thai peanut flavor was on the mild side, but good nevertheless. We did think the portion of rice accompanying the curry orders should have been larger.
For those who enjoy a glass of wine with their meal, the chardonnay tried was pleasant and modestly priced at $4.75.
Service was prompt and friendly, the decor more classic than usual, and attractive. This was our second visit, and we look forward to returning again.

Red's Sandwich Shop

Located in the Old London Coffee House, which dates back to the 1700s, Red’s Sandwich Shop has been visited by many Celebrities, Congressman, Senators and even First Lady Barbara Bush. A relaxed, friendlly atmosphere in a historic building is the perfect place to join Salem locals for the BEST breafkast and lunch menu in town. The food is delicious, all home-style cooking at pricing so reasonable you almost feel guilty. Having visited numerous restaurants in Salem that charge outrageous pricing for mediocre food, Red's Sandwich Shop is the crown jewel of the city in terms of excellent food, great prices, and a lovely environment with a friendly staff. They offer an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, Dinner Specials, and a daily $6.95 Special.. And when they say roasted Turkey, they mean roasted Turkey -- whole turkeys are roasted on the premises and carved for your order. In a tribute to Thanksgiving, their Home Style Turkey Sandwich (roasted Turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce and gravy) is out of this world! Wonderful specialty items from Chicken Marsala and Chicken Piccata to Chicken Pot Pie are made to order. Soups and chowders made fresh daily. For a variety of sandwiches from open-faced, to club, to roll-ups -- they cannot be beat. Red's is an award-winning restaurant that received the "BEST BREAKFAST ON THE NORTH SHORE" award for 24 years in a row! I cannot rave enough about this restaurant. If you have only one restaruant to visit in Salem, make it Red's.

We attempted to have a late lunch at "Reds" on a Monday afternoon based upon all the great reviews we read. We arrived 40 minutes before the kitchen was closing. The.Staff appeared irritated by our presence and we were glared at for several minutes prior to being offered seating. Perhaps we interrupted their rush to get their shift over and done with or perhaps they were irritated by the continuous running and screaming of the high energy 4 year old who seemed to either belong to, or somehow be the ultimate responsibility of, their less than pleasant hostess. However, my guess is that the staff just wanted out for the day. The hostess made a point to notify each customer who walked through the door after us as to how many minutes remained until closing. On the plus side, My Husband enjoyed one.of their specialty sandwiches, which I also tried and it was very good, however we both agreed that the meatloaf that I ordered was disgusting and Neither of us could eat it. Between the crunch of the egg shells and fibrous meat substance it was a ""no no to the meatloaf". On the bright side, the Waitress did apologize when I told her my meal was disgusting and neither one of us could eat the "mystery meat". Besides the "buy one meal ,throw the other in the trash deal", we also enjoyed being scolded by the hostess for attempting to pay with our debit card after not seeing the tiny sign buried amongst all the clutter that clearly read "cash only". If the opportunity presented itself, we might try this place again based upon the other consistently favorable reviews we have read, but if we did we would definitely be sure to bring our business to them earlier in the day so as not to inconvenience the staff who work there.

Petrillo's Italian Kitchen

Reviewed By DavidS60745 - Boston, Massachusetts

This was our first time here. The food was freshly prepared with quality ingredients. Decor was pleasant and service was fine. The waitstaff was "correct" but not particularly cordial. The hostess was curt and most definitely not welcoming. She never even bothered to look up or say goodbye on our way out. How hard is it to attempt to be pleasant? If it were not for the staff interactions, we would rate this restaurant excellent. The food and preparation were sufficiently good that we would try it again.
