Looking for an early midweek dinner in Clute, a local colleague pointed us to El Toro. We were greeted by a friendly and enthusiastic group of young ladies at the front door - that's where the fun started. The establishment's interior is spacious and nicely appointed. Our ebullient server, Ellisa, was quick with to-the-point recommendations from the menu.

We started with Margaritas (standard quality), complementary tortilla chips & two types of dipping sauces, and the Chili Con Queso appetizer. A word to the wise here - unless you have a large party, stick with the small size unless you're looking to fill up on cheese. I enjoyed the El Dorado (chicken breast with shrimp, crawfish, mushrooms, peppers), though I didn't notice the missing guacamole & pico de gallo until my meal was finished. The steak fajitas were another table highlight - ample quantity and quality.

Bottom line - I'd make a return trip to El Toro. The staff made our visit fun, and the fare is good value.

Phat Boyz Mexican Cafe

I really don't want to burst any bubbles about the quality of the food here but have to be honest. First of all, the building is okay. I took a picture of the outside and it is kind of charming in the dark at 5 a.m. There is not a lot of light leading to the restaurant so you may miss the turn. The server was very nice and really did keep our coffee cups filled. The food is expensive. Twice as much as you pay at Mexican restaurants where I come from (San Antonio). The breakfast tacos ($3.95) are enormous! See my pictures of one rolled and one opened. I think the tortilla was about 8 inches around. I put a fork next to it so you could compare. I could only eat a third of it so the value is there. The flour tortillas are house made but not fresh when we were served. The tortilla would have benefited from 30 seconds on the griddle. The flavor of the tortilla was very good and held up to the fillings. The eggs and the rest of the ingredients (potatoes and bacon) were obviously precooked so did not have that fresh flavor that you see in other restaurants. The bacon was rubbery and chewy and the potatoes were soft and mushy. The refried beans that were smeared on the tortilla were very tasty and there was also shredded cheese. We were given one choice of a medium spicy salsa roja. It was okay. this place could be stellar and stand out against any other locally owned Mexican restaurant in San Antonio with a little more attention to the above details. I absolutely loved the coffee and the fact that they open at 5 a.m. There aren't many choices at this time in the morning around here.

We were staying in a beach house in Surfside so when we found out the Clute restaurant delivered we were already happy. Then the food was very good. Pizzas were delicious & the popcorn chicken bites are more like chunks of chicken instead of popcorn size. While staying in Surfside we had 2 deliveries and were satisfied with both. So nice not to leave the beach & clean up to go to a restaurant. We would have gone to the restaurant as it was that good.

I'm a vegetarian so wouldn't choose Brian's BBQ as a place to eat. But because of work, I ate there many times. My carnivore friends say it is the best BBQ in the area. As a vegetarian, I loved their baked potatoes--very creamy. That, together with corn on the cob, beans, coleslaw...I was quite satisfied.

Lake Jackson Seafood Restaurant

We live in Lake Jackson. There are lots of restaurants, but this one is reasonably priced and has a wide variety of seafood dishes plus hamburgers and steaks. Fried shrimp are popular here and theirs are as good as any in this community. (Shrimp boats ply the Gulf of Mexico out of Freeport, which is 8 miles distant.). Side dishes include dirty rice and fried vegetables - a very satisfactory portion. We get take-out and have patronized them very frequently. Way better than pizza.

Reviewed By sightseerNb_Tx - Nb, Tx

Based on previous reviews, I thought the seafood would be better, but it was not. There was plentyof chicken in the gumbo, but the taste was lacking with spices, a little bland. The grilled fish was OK while the scallops were tough and chewy and the grilled shrimp was cold. The rice that came with the gumbo was dry and not flaky as well.

I ordered the Supreme Taco salad-beef fajita meat, chicken fajita meat, shrimp, mushrooms along with lettuce tomato shredded cheese and quest as dressing. I got the guacamole on the side. The salad was excellent! I prefer chicken and shrimp to beef, but it was all good. It might look a little small when they set the plate down but the taco shell bowl is deep and there was plenty. I couldn't even finish it. I highly recommend this salad. Service was good and the waitress friendly.

The owner was the waiter and we asked for some more traditional chinese options rather than the usual Americanized fare. He recommended a fish dish that was really delicious. He is very opinionated, but don't let that put you off. Service was very good and the food a nice surprise for such a small town.
