One of the Best Places to Stay on Christmas Island

The Sunset has a great location and lovely views, the rooms are spacious and very comfortable. There is also a pool area with a barbeque. The pool is lovely for an evening swim with a temperature of about 27 degrees. We used the barbeque to have a romantic dinner one night which was just fabulous. Unless you are interested in paying over $1,000 for your accommodation at Swell Lodge, I think the Sunset is one of the best places to stay on Christmas Island. It may not seem like luxurious accommodation but frankly, I wasn't able to find any resort style accommodation on the island. Angela, at the front desk was lovely and tried to help whenever she could. I would recommend hiring a car during your stay to zoom around the island but if you wanted to be without a car for a few days you certainly could manage to walk to many places, including the Supermarket, the Visitors Centre and Flying Fish Cove, from the Sunset. There are fabulous birds, including the Golden Bosun (pictures attached) that fly just in front of the Sunset most days. Also, as the name suggests you can enjoy the sunset from your room each evening. We stayed on the lower level, which was great because there was no one else staying on the lower level. However, it may be better to book the upper level if you want more privacy.

The best place to stay on Christmas Island

We stayed at Cocos Pandang Lodge for a week on a family diving holiday. It was near perfect and ideal for us with 3 bedrooms, a nice area to sit outside at the front, ceiling fans, and aircon that works well with separate units in each bedroom and the living area, and really everything you might need is provided. There are four apartments all with similar layout, two double bedrooms and living area at the front, an enclosed walkway along the back ideal for hanging washing (with drying rack, pullout line, and pegs), then large 3rd bedroom with double bed and single bed, and laundry/bathroom. We could wash our wetsuits out in the laundry tub and then take them around front to hang from awning and dry in the afternoon sun. Having a washing machine was great since Virgin are strict on the 23kg limit which included our dive gear, so not many clothes needed. You can book as 1, 2 or 3 bedroom and any un-booked bedrooms will be locked. All units have been renovated and are clean and comfortable. The living area is small with 2 x 2-seater couches and a small dining table. There are quite a few TV channels to choose from. The kitchen is also small but has a full oven/cooktop, microwave, large fridge/freezer, with everything else that we needed (including salt & pepper, plenty of tea coffee sugar, zip lock bags, glad wrap, and foil). We were surprised to find a full litre of milk waiting in the fridge for us, much appreciated because our flight arrived late and the supermarket closes at 5pm (tho we found out later that there are some other small grocery type shops that re-open at 4pm for a few hours on some days). There is also a communal BBQ in between units 2 and 3. The bathroom is well supplied with hairdryer, plenty of toilet paper, shampoo, body wash, conditioner, and quite a few towels. We knew that only Telstra works on Christmas Island, but only for phone calls and texts, no mobile data at all anywhere. The Wifi at Cocos Pandang Lodge is good and we received a few vouchers on arrival, they are limited to either 2048mb or 5120mb so you need to be mindful of how you're using it, tho plenty for us. We loved sitting out the front and chatting to the other guests. The view I would describe as ocean glimpses and better from #1 and #2 but all look out over a nice grassy expanse to the road, some shops and the Golden Bosun Tavern with a gap between where we can see the ocean. The Tavern is a great place for a drink or a meal and there are convenient steps down to the road to make our lives even easier. They do get a bit noisy at night sometimes when there are lots of workers on the island. Something we weren't aware of until a few days before we left Perth was the requirement to do an online entry permit for both Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands for each person, and also G2G for re-entry to mainland WA. All were easy to complete and approved immediately but good to get it done before you travel. Flights from Perth to IOT islands are considered to be International so restrictions apply to liquids in hand luggage and some foods are not allowed including home-grown fruit/veg. Supermarket bought food is ok but bring your receipt as proof of where you bought them may be required. The main supermarket on Christmas Island has everything you would need and also duty free alcohol (spirits are very cheap). Fresh produce is more expensive but they have high freight costs to bring it in so fair enough. We ate out every night with plenty of options and variety. We have really enjoyed staying here and highly recommend it for anyone traveling to Christmas Island.

A great self catering place to stay. In the Settlement it was close to everything and was clean and provided all the essentials. The manager was friendly and helpful, allowing full use of the room and facilities up to the time I had to leave for the airport

So I arrived in xmas island and had to contact jenni for a free transfer to the lodge, I find out she is also Kim who owns the lodge as well. Kim being her Chinese name. I was the only guest in all week. So had the place to myself. At least I didn’t need to jostle for a place in the jacuzzi tub. Accommodation was spacious and well maintained. I had a great view across to the Indian Ocean across the tropical palms. A communal kitchen was available and well kept clean and tidy. Housekeeping was excellent and nothing was to much trouble. All in all a good place to stay. Oh and you can rent a 4 WD from jenni/Kim as they run a rental business as well. You will need one.

Christmas Island Apartments

A perfect spot to stay.

Reviewed By Wendy0704

Well appointed apartments in a convenient location. The official photos don’t properly convey how nice these apartments actually are. They are quite new, modern, light and bright. We had a 2 bedroom upper floor apartment with a spacious balcony overlooking the ocean in the distance - a perfect spot to enjoy breakfast or sunset drinks. The ground floor apartments have outdoor patios in a garden setting. Our apartment had two Queen bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, a nice lounge area, bathroom with washing machine and dryer, plus undercover parking. Everything you need. A car is a must on Christmas Island as you just can’t get around otherwise. That said, the apartments are a minute’s walk from a grocery store that also sells alcohol, and two coffee shops, and a 5 min walk from the Lucky Ho, one of the few restaurants open at night. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and our host Jenny was delightful, and very helpful when our flight home was delayed. Highly recommended.
