Hornsbury Mill Restaurant

Dine by candlelight as the waterwheel turns The Wheelroom Restaurant is small but beautifully appointed with ample space for 40 people. A light and airy room by day, the Wheelroom with its flickering candles is transformed into a romantic evening setting with soft music by night and the constant turn of the waterwheel behind the glass partition enhances your experience whenever you dine. Tables can be arranged to suit your needs, so whether eating alone, as a couple or with a party of family or friends the Wheelroom can accommodate you. Your welcome at the bar is second to none, choose your dishes from the a la carte menu, wander down to the Wheelroom where our fully trained, attentive but unobtrusive waitresses will look after you from starters to coffee and liqueurs

We dined here with a friend, from the Christmas menu. The gravlax starter promised good things to come but the Turkey was rather disappointing. Were we actually eating Turkey, we wondered – it was difficult to tell from the taste. The root vegetables were generally good but the Brussel sprouts were under-cooked and the Savoy cabbage was over-cooked. We’ve tasted better Christmas pudding and the crème brûlée was a very poor example of the genre – far too ‘set’ and lacking creaminess. This place has a somewhat unprepossessing entrance, although the lounge is cosy enough. However, the restaurant is largely devoid of cosiness and the absence of table cloths makes for a rather ‘basic’, sterile look. In our view this is not ‘fine dining’ and although Hornsbury Mill is certainly smarter than The Cotley Arms at Wambrook (see out review of that pub) it lacks the food quality and presentational finesse which The Cotley has achieved so splendidly. We would not dine here again.

Called in after wandering by.
Friendly welcome, newspapers for those dining alone.
The gallery is a part of the restaurant, which made breakfast more interesting than usual.
I ordered off menu which was fine with the waitress.
The sausages were wonderful, breakfast was all cooked to order.
Plenty of butter and marmalade supplied with my ordered toast.
I would certainly eat here again should I find myself in Chard

Went for dinner and had a truly excellent experience. My meal consisted off scallops with cauliflower pure and black pudding. Cooked to perfection. An amazing steak burger followed, better than any in the so called burger restaurants in London by far. Dessert, wow, treacle tart which was just like Mum made. My daughter and son-in-law had different choices but all meals were just superb. The friendly servers were just as good as the food. Thank you Cotley Inn, we will be back next time I visit Somerset.

Howley Tavern

Reviewed By Hugh_Christina_S - Chard, United Kingdom

The Howley Tavern offers good, wholesome pub food - not haute cuisine, but very reasonable, appetizingly presented 'home cooking'. The menu offers a wide choice and the warm dishes are certainly 'piping hot, which is where some establishments fall down. The staff is exceptionally friendly and welcoming, the service prompt and efficient, and the surroundings, well, er, very 'pubby'! This is not grand dining but very acceptable nonetheless. Could be exceptional on a fine summers day, when dining al fresco with the fine views over the surrounding countryside would add to a pleasurable experience.

We have just had a family function for 16 at the Candlelight and have to give a huge thank you to Mike and Simon and their team for a fantastic time, the champagne tower was perfect for the occasion and a bit of fun, shame we couldn’t eat all of the buffet and they put a lot of hard work into catering for Gluten free and dairy free diets, the food exceeded expectations witch is a rare thing.
Huge screen with a slideshow and our own music made a great family gathering.
Will 100% be booking this again at our next get together and no washing up.
Thanks again to the Candlelight.

The Windwhistle Inn

"Windwhistle" does evoke a clifftop location, but is name of the local hills. Being on the brow of a range of hills, it does have a panoramic view on a clear day and you can see all the way to Glastonbury Tor & the Bristol Channel. The original building which houses the traditional bar dates from the 17th Century and was once a notorious haunt of Smugglers, highwaymen, and cut-throats. It has a romantic 'Jamaica Inn' type atmosphere and local folklore has it that if you looked like you had money on you, you would be lured or dragged down into the cellar and your throat slit. Since then the building has been extended to now include a separate restaurant area for quiet dining, a large bright & airy conservatory where the famous carvery is served and a function room ideal for weddings and other large parties. All this is set in 5 acres of beautifully maintained Gardens with plenty of outdoor Seating and loads of space for children (and dogs) to run off their energy after lunch. Both indoor and outdoor games are available for everyone to enjoy. We serve modern pub classics with the emphasis on good quality locally sourced produce. Specials are available in addition to the menu every day and our ever popular Carvery is served through-out the day on a Sunday. Chef/Patron Tim Robinson trained under Gary Rhodes giving him the experience to provide top quality pub food in a relaxed and friendly environment.

We had high hopes of this place, having been recommended to go there by several locals. Initial impressions were good and our waitress was immensely welcoming and friendly. When our platters arrived we faced the prospect of quite a feast but, oh no, the mushrooms completely ruined the experience and we will never, ever return to this restaurant again. The mushrooms appeared tinned, but this, in itself, was not the problem. No, it was the truly unpleasant flavour - an overriding bitter taste, together with a hint of chemical akin the bleach. We mentioned it to the waitress when leaving, but the reaction that "no-one else had mentioned it" was surprising, given that the taste was so unpleasant. What a pity - an otherwise reasonable (but not outstanding) breakfast was spoiled by including a sub-standard ingredient. What's wrong with fresh mushrooms anyway?!
