This is a cosy restaurant that has a limited menu (19 items on a board) plus an extensive drinks menu. The idea is to pick several (staff recommend 3) items as the equivalent of a full meal. When we visited, the menu contained meatballs, deer in a red wine sauce, chicken strips in white wine and maple syrup as well as soup, vegetables, chips, fried rice balls, a take on Austrian Knödel (a sort of dumpling) and fried rice balls. Water is free. Overall the food was good and tasty and the concept works well. The menu is in in Swiss German so you may need some help but the staff and friendly and the ambience is relaxed. We spent 77 Swiss France including 4 glasses of wine , 6 dishes for main course and an a shared dessert. Each dish was either 7 or 9 francs in our selection.

We visited the Stalden whilst on an overnight trip to Solothurn. It was a very warm and pleasant evening and they had space in the gardens of the restaurant on a nice table for two.We had a mixed dish of starters which included meat, fish and cheese which was very enjoyable.Staff were pleasant and friendly and the location was excellent. The restaurant was fully booked and we were lucky that the table we got had been vacated just before we arrived. Around 70 chf for a meal for two.A very nice evening out.

The establishment had a sign showing that they serve warm food from 11:30-21:45, hence why we chose this place. When we went inside, we were told that they only serve from their small menu, and from it, even only a small section of it was possible. We requested to speak to the “boss”, who then told us that they’re short on staff on Tuesdays and it’s production day. After we replied that THAT is not our problem, she retorted with arrogance that we should go somewhere else. One of our professional backgrounds was in the hospitality industry (working in different countries too), and hearing such arguments that are even so weak (even coming from “the boss”!) is an absolute no-go. In any case, arrogance in the “hospitality” industry is a paradox — it defies its meaning.

Solothurn is an expensive town. For work, we were looking for a restaurant that looked filled with locals (usually a sign of good price-quality ratio) at a decent price. After looking all around town at menus and prices, this one was our best option. And we were not disappointed. The 10 of us were very satisfied with this meal and really enjoyed it. It was delicious, and service was great.I had fish that melted in my mouth, with really good Swiss wine. One note that was helpful too was the menu in English and a server that spoke French. Much appreciated.

This restaurant is directly located at the river Aare in Solothurn. Architecture is a perfect blend of modern with the still partially visible parts of the very old building. This mix creates a very cosy and special atmosphere which is supported by the lighting and candles. Staff is extremely friendly, sometimes not fully on top of things (wine was wrong, timing was not always perfect), but makes small slips up with a smile and the strive to really care. The menu is a modern interpretation of Swiss Food with a touch of world fare. We had a four course fixed dinner. Our fish starter (grilled salmon) was fantastic, the second starter was long cooked very soft and tender cheek of veal, the entree the filet of a special beef (don't remember the detail) - all really (!) tasty and perfect, just may be the combination of the second starter and the entree is not the best idea as they don't really match. For desert I had a cheese plate - only for real cheese lovers, others may be challenged by the marvelously strong tastes.... the ladies had a mix of sweets - here the same as with the main: everything on its own really good, but maybe the combo not well balanced. Together with white and red whine from the well arranged and reasonably priced (for Switzerland) wine menu this was a perfect evening out.

We had lunch at the Alten Stephan while sightseeing in Solothurn (which is a gorgeous small town!) It is in the historic centre, in a lovely old building. The restaurant has a lot of windows and is nicely furnished. Service was impeccable and always with a smile. The food was very good. We had a salad to start - only comment would be that the sauce was perhaps a little too sweet - and the Wienerschnitzel with frites to follow. This was the best Wienerschnitzel either of us have ever had. Delicious! This is not a cheap place - the two course lunch for two with 5dl of red wine from Vaud, mineral water and a coffee was 140frs. but we felt what we ate was worth the price. There were lunch time menus available - for less - but the dishes on them were not what we wanted.
