Came here after it was suggested by friends. Service was very good. Sushi was very good as well. Nice flavors and fresh. Tried the Canuck roll, Iron chef roll and the sunomono salad. The salad was just ok, not much fish in it so didn't seem worth it. Prices are about average. Overall I would return.

We are here last night and really enjoyed our meal. Fresh and flavourful. The sushi and sashimi was lovely. The staff were helpful. The miso soup was rather salty. Apart from that everything was really nice. A pleasant surprise to find such good sushi so far from the ocean.

Probably the worst thing about this restaurant is the location; smack dab in the middle of Kelowna's industrial North End. Hence, the view is horrendous and the clientele is definitely not in the higher end. But therein lies its charm... a low key, blue collar-type restaurant that is not stuffy or pretentious. A small dining area with tables for small groups; no large tables that I could see. Family run, the one server is a pleasant Korean lady (yes, most Japanese restaurants in Kelowna are not owned/operated by Japanese) who attends to almost all our needs... we only had to ask for tea once. The food is actually very good. My son had the tofu donburi bowl as his vegetarian choice and he was quite pleased as it was tasty and filling. My wife and I shared rolls and tempura. The assorted tempura was mostly excellent; hot and crispy and not too oily. The rolls were excellent with generous amounts of seafood and other ingredients. I have to say the 911 Roll was our favourite however, one should be warned that it is quite spicy. Also, the trend for many sushi restaurants is to add their own signature flavour. Some are hits, some not. This restaurant uses mango and I have to say it's a hit. First, they use fresh Philippine mangoes which are far superior to their Mexican cousins and the sweetness of the large slices of the heavenly fruit is a wonderful compliment to the salt of the soy sauce and the tang of the wasabi.I do have a couple of minor sore points which I will espouse now:1) The assorted tempura came with two stalks of asparagus which is not typical for tempura. At first we were excited to try it and the tips and majority of the stalk was not bad. However, towards the base it became stringy and tough to eat. While I do not necessarily disagree with continued use of this vegetable it may be suggested that in future the asparagus be cut shorter to not have to subject the diner to the weaker tasting part of the stem.2) The tempura sauce did not seem right. It actually tasted like watered down soy sauce. If that was the case, major faux pas.3) As for the soy sauce, it also tasted different. I do not know if it was a different brand, different type, or whether it was also watered down but the soy sauce was more bland than I have come to expect. The price point was quite reasonable given the quality of the food and the fact that this small, non-food chain restaurant has been in the same location for 6 years is a testament to the fact the proprietors must be doing something right. I would go again. Four stars.

This restaurant has been in this location for 10 years and I have never tried it before. What was I thinking? On the advice of my son, we gave it a try and I was not disappointed.First impressions were favourable; open garage style sidewalk frontage, tasteful decor, a number of clientele enjoying their meals, and wonderful soft jazz playing in the background to add to the casual feel of the place. Our server was uber friendly and beautiful. She let me know that this restaurant is Japanese owned and they make all their noodles from scratch, on site. Speaking of food, we had the ramen and the prawn appetizer. Everything was delectable. The ramen broth was perfect and not too salty. Noodles were perfect tenderness and the amount of vegetables and meat more than adequate.Price is mid range; not cheap but certainly not expensive. As a total eating experience, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would not hesitate to go back and make this a regular dinner location. 5 stars.

Casual Japanese Dining

We always come to this restaurant when we come to Kelowna every summer. This year, we were disappointed. Now it is no longer on our list. The food came too fast, and out of order. The Gomae was skimpy and not very tasty. They were out of vegetable potstickers, so we got regular, and they were deep fried and greasy, hard, not soft. The sauce had no taste. I ordered the Donburi with chicken, and it was basically chicken teriyaki on rice. Donburi has egg and onion, usually mushroom—this was not it. The worst thing was the soy sauce—it had obviously been watered down. Who does that?We will NOT be going back. Nari Sushi in Mission is far more authentic. This is just a tourist trap.

We love Japanese food so stopped by this place for dinner. The karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and prawn mayo (ebi mayo) were wonderful--very much like you'd get in Japan. The chicken was perfectly fried but still moist inside and the prawns were absolutely fresh. Ramen was not quite so good (the broths lacked the complexity that is present in really good ramen), but tasty nonetheless. I had the miso sesame and my husband had a fusion version with coconut broth and chicken.

Contrary to what I've read by others, we experienced very good service on our first visit to Bluetail Sushi Bistro. Our son, who is a real sushi fan, and was the one who got me to enjoy sushi, rated this place as "average" and so I defer to his judgement.

Showed up at 5pm - just as they were opening for dinner. They asked us if we had reservations but we didn't. Even so they were able to fit us in at one of the last non-booked tables. Over the course of dinner, they even turned people away as the restaurant started filling up. Fantastic service. Refreshing selection of Japanese cuisine. Everything we had was delicious.
