Small but traditional restaurant. Full on a wet windy February night. Food is first class, all fresh local produce. We had the 3 course 20-50 euro menu. Superb. 1 tip- book or you may be disappointed

Restaurant La Matelote

Reviewed By zingy171 - Manningtree, United Kingdom

Before I begin, rather than write "delicious!"after everything I'll just say this. Everything we had at La Matelote was DELICIOUS! We were in Boulogne for just a few hours and chose La Matelote to eat having read reviews on trip advisor. We began our meal with a superb mise en bouche consisting of a mussel soup, a grape jelly and a pumpkin and herring soup. For my entrée I chose the pate de fois gras with toasted brioche and my partner had fish soup. For my main I chose the angus beef which was served with mushrooms, mange tout and croquette potatoes and my partner had dos de cabillaut. We followed this with the cheese option, three generous portions of local cheeses and coffee with a selection of sweets. With a half bottle of a very good red and an aperitif each the bill of 100 euros was not expensive for the quality of the food and the standard of service we received. Will definitely be returning. First class.

Le Chatillon

Le Chatillon restaurant in the heart of Boulogne’s Capecure attracts everyone in town for the freshest of fish and great atmosphere. The bubbling ground floor dining room will remind you of the interior of an antique fishing vessel with wooden bar, pictures of old Boulogne and copper detailing, while the first floor space is more serene, though prices go up a notch too. M. Baude was a fish dealer in a past incarnation, so he only serves the highest quality fish and crustaceans. This atmospheric restaurant gives the true flavour of the old fishing port.

We visit this fine restaurant several times a year and it just gets better and better. As on this occasion sometimes it is our main reason for coming to France. Fantastic fresh fish and great service. More of an experience that just a meal. Can't wait to go back again.

La Liegeoise

Located on the seafront Promenade in Wimereux, on the north eastern coast of France, La Ligeoise is renowned for its excellent seafood menu and ocean views. Wimereux is situated between Boulognet and the Cte dOpale, and La Ligeoise is tucked away on the first floor of the swanky Atlantic Hotel. This restaurant has buckets of old-school seaside style, and regulars recommend ordering the Promenade en Mer a selection of up to seven courses from Alain Delpierres innovative French menu. Favourites include the fresh foie gras with fig compote; the roasted lamb with aubergines and garlic jus; and the white chocolate rice pudding with mint ice cream.

Wife & I stayed overnight at the Chateau de la Marine - the owner (Guy) drove us down to the local Petite Brocante in the evening & the owner drove us back, which seems to be a standard arrangement - we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, the restaurant has great ambiance and the meal & service were excellent - merci beaucoup encore madame! Also in the village is a little bar/ brasserie Le Denacre, great for lunch, best mussels I've ever had, full of chunky veg & herbs - seriously, don't miss it!

l'ilot vert

L'Ilot Vert is within the Citadel of Boulogne which is already a big plus.Stepping into the restaurant you discover a chic bistro look, not at all pretentious but inviting. The welcome and subsequent service is professional and friendly. An amuse bouche is served while the menu is perused, and this is your chance to order an accompanying aperitif or a wine from the excellent list.We skipped the starters but ordered fish dishes from the main courses and desserts to follow. We feel that this is among the best restaurants in which we have dined, and we both travel extensively. Our bill was about €100 (including a good bottle of wine and coffee which came with gorgeous chocolates). There is no way in the UK that we could enjoy the ambience, service or quality of cuisine at this price. For instance, L'Ilot Vert knocks Stein's into a cocked hat on all counts (in my opinion)! It is always a pleasure to return

restaurant de la haute ville

After two attempts to have a nice diner in Boulogne, it was finally at Restaurant de la Haute Ville that we succeeded. My wife and I both had the €24 menu, and were very satisfied with the quality of the food and the service. I had the angus beef and my wife the skate fish. The entree was based on hot cheese and while not very common, I hardly recommend it if you like cheese. Both Deserts were fine as well (chocolate mousse and caramelized apple).
The only thing they need to work on is there presence. We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor, and still managed to walk right past it. :)

Chez Jules

23 of us dined last night.
Food ok. Charcuterie nice but portion ludicrous. Enough for 2 or 3 people. I hate waste and do not appreciate too large portions.
Starter of crevettes rose spot on.
We asked for cheese pre dessert. I had asked what cheese was served and had been shown a leaflet with varied local cheeses. We each got 3 pieces of cheese which looked identical. St Paulain type. Apparently they were different but I could detect no difference. Cheese served straight from fridge - unforgivable. Probably only 1/3 was eaten.
Service exceptionally slow. Half of diners decided not to wait for dessert which they insisted in serving to empty places.
Stupidity over cheese - €8 each - and slow service turned a decent meal into a disappointing one.

La Grillardine

Most offerings in this seaside town focus on satisfyingly the tourists taste for mussels. For something different with the personal touch try this tiny 10 seat gem.
We had no reservation on a Saturday night but as we were in low season we got a table for 2 right way. A young couple and a young chef prepare and serve a limited menu of the day from a minuscule kitchen area. We chose from a two or three course option.
The young man explained the menu in excellent English for us. I started with the homemade cheese tart. Then pastry was flakey and the cheese subtle. I had the beef brochettes with a light peppercorn sauce. My wife choosing a sauced whitefish poached in paper with a sweet potato mash. Both served with the ubiquitous chips.
A homemade apple pie al a mode with fresh whipped cream finished the lovely meal. This threesome tries very hard to please and it shows in the food and the attention to their patrons.
Well priced for the area. I highly recommend and believe in supporting this quaint little spot in the old walled city.
