Chobe Base

Reviewed By TaylorsTripping

Muchenje Campsite proved the perfect base for our stay in Chobe. Haydn and his Team's attention to detail from the chipped pathways to the swept camp sites, the little essentials shop plus all the infrastructure services of power & water really ticks all the boxes. On top of this is the lawned area around the pool plus the viewing deck when one just wants to chill. Then of course you have a magnificent view over the Chobe Floodplains and your are less than 10 kms into Chobe GR proper.

Sable Alley

Sable Alley is a complete rebuild of a favourite old bush camp. Overlooking a lagoon that’s connected to the Khwai and Sable Alley rivers, just a stone’s throw from the world-famous Moremi Game Reserve, this enviable location means the game literally comes to us. From the swimming pool, lounge, outdoor seating areas and all the guest’s tents there are uninterrupted views of the resident pod of around 30 hippos and the large herds of plains game, elephant and buffalo coming to drink – an idyllic way to spend an afternoon, especially with a cold gin and tonic in hand. When you are ready to explore further afield, Sable Alley’s expert guides are on hand to interpret the sights, smells, and sounds of the bush. The massive 440,000 acre Khwai Private Reserve comprises some of the most fantastically diverse habitats in northern Botswana, including riverine woodlands, open floodplains, rivers and mopane woodland. This range of habitats means an array of wildlife, including lion, leopard, wild dog, elephant, buffalo and of course the eponymous sable antelope. Game viewing will not just be from safari vehicles (both during the day and at night). At Sable Alley we also offer mokoro safaris —enjoy being gently ‘poled’ along the water in a traditional canoe—a wonderful way to do some bird watching and game viewing. Boating is a highlight when water levels are high. Back at camp, your home in the bush is one of our spacious and stylish tents. Elevated onto raised decks, each of the camp’s twelve luxurious tents has an uninterrupted view of the lagoon, with en suite bathrooms, private verandahs and private, indoor & outdoor showers where you can wash off the dust of each truly memorable day. Two of these are comfortable family units with interconnected tents. End a day of exhilarating game viewing with a night drive where you will encounter nocturnal creatures such as leopard, spiky porcupines and fearless honey badgers.

This was second lodge on our 10 days trip to Botswana and we loved everything about it. Lodge itself is beautiful! All the common areas are open space and facing water hole filled with hippos. Animals come to have a drink all day long, so you can have your drink and watch baboons, impalas, even elephants come by. Incredible. " Tents" are stunning, incredibly spacious with large dressing/bathroom area, indoor and outdoor shower, deck overlooking water. Food was fantastic, you always had couple of choices of main course and presentation was always beautiful. The best part however were game drives. We had phenomenal tracker Tizzar and every game drive exceeded our expectations. This was my 11 th African safari, but by far the best one and I hope to return. 5 star all the way!

We stayed for three nights and had a wonderful time. Our guide Naku, excuse the spelling, collected us from the airstrip and was with us throughout our stay. We enjoyed a late afternoon game drive on our way to the camp including our first sundowners before reaching the camp as darkness was falling. Our tented accommodation was on a raised platform overlooking the water and was comfortable and clean. The staff sang a lovely welcome song and we were given a brief orientation talk. Everyone was very friendly and the service levels were very good. Lots of staff training was evident. Food was announced by the chef and beautifully presented. Vegetarian choices were available. We had early morning and late afternoon game drives with a good number of species sighted. Wild dogs, Lions, Wild cat and Leopard and many antelope and Elephant. Good bird knowledge shown too. The area is quite wooded so don’t expect plains species in any number. The Hyena didn’t show up but footprints around the tent each morning showed they were about somewhere. Fantastic Elephant encounters from the deck of the camp at several times in the day and evening. Coffee stops, a wonderful bush picnic lunch laid out by the staff, high tea and daily sundowners meant we never went hungry or unrefreshed. We were always met on arrival and escorted to our vehicle on departure. Everyone checked how we were and showed interest in our experiences. The camp wasn’t full and could cope well with more visitors. Overall we couldn’t find any fault. We had hot water bottles for our beds and first thing in the morning and blankets whenever we needed them. It was winter. We did brave the pool mainly for its marvellous setting. No shortage of hot water in the tent. A perfect camp for including in your safari and a good contrast being on the dry side rather than the wetter delta area and the more commercial Chobi river camps.

Bananyana Backpackers Camp

If management hasn't changed, stay away of this place

Reviewed By Nelson_Souza_Aguiar

I'm quite surprised to see TripAdvisor exposing this place. What was supposed to be a single night there became a nightmare for me, three yrs ago, by the time I arrived there around 7pm. It was already dark night. Even though the place was informed about my arrival around that time, when I came into the property there was no living person but a weird sleepy dog. The place looked disarranged, one of its houses being restored but, still, l waited around 1 hour. As no one appeared, I decided to walk away in search of help and a place to sleep in spite of the darkness in such isolated area by the border of the Chobe National Park. Well, I just gave up the idea by the time I stepped out and heard sounds coming from the bushes. Once back, I decided to "invade" one of its tiny rooms, wich I found opened with spiders all over, lock myself inside and see what would happen in the following morning. When I moved with that purpose a car arrived in front of the property. The driver remained in it, a guy left and came into the property asking out loud who I was. "I'm willing to be a guest", I answered. When he approached I smelled alcohol all around. The guy was a bald black short lad quite drunk who identified himself as the owner. He asked if I had money, I instinctively sad no and he grabbed my arm telling me to leave with him to withdrawal some money and buy him a car (!). After that we could go party and manage my stay by the morning, he said. I immediately took my bags in the tiny room and walked away. By the time he came back to the car and left with his partner I was already walking in the dark towards some lights I could see some 200m away. Luckily, a concerned guy in there left his home and drove me to a safe guesthouse in town. I'm a very very tough and low budget backpacker, I have experienced loads of things in my world travels, but bananyana exceeded my worse expectations of a -1 star hostel. So far I haven't decided what could be worse - the guy as a scoundrel passing by or, in fact, as the real owner. Btw, the concerned guy who helped me recognized the lad as the owner after I described him. That said, if you decide to go, pray for a new management!

Khwai Tented Camp- African Bush Camps

Set within the Okavango Delta’s community-run Khwai Concession, this beautiful camp is tucked under the trees on the edge of the Khwai River. This river is all that separates the iconic Moremi Game Reserve and the concession, with hippos, elephants and even lions crossing over from time to time. Watching these animals manoeuvre through the water is an exceptional experience for even the most travelled safari veterans. The elegantly designed camp hosts six standard tents and one family unit, keeping in line with the intimate and exclusive wilderness experience. The new camp effortlessly bridges the gap between luxury accommodation and feeling like you’re in the great African outdoors. Woven baskets and beaded décor, along with modern elements, create an authentic contemporary African style.

Great stay

Reviewed By ChipElla

We stayed at 3 African Bush Camps during our safari and were blown away by each one. Our hostess was Helga, she was great to chat with and always made sure everyone had a comfortable stay. We still talk about how we wish that Chef Yum Yum could cook for us at home. This camp had our favorite food. From the grilled meats to the sides to the desserts it was just delicious. Our guide Esse was great too! He was great to talk to and knew a lot about the area and the animals we encountered. He always knew when an elephant was just showing off and how to respond with the vehicle to keep everyone safe when they decided to intimidate us. The only downside is that the air strip was flooded last year, so it’s about a 1.5 hour drive to the next air strip, but the guides keep it fun like a safari drive.
