Wilhelms Restaurant & Wintergarten

This was our first time to this place. We had dinner with friends in Wilhelm's wintergarden and very much enjoyed the excellent food. Especially the "Probiermenu" was a great choice and evidenced the great potential this restaurant absolutely has. Unfortunately as excellent as the food was, as mediocre was the service. Friendly, but not attentive at all and certainly not at the professional level you'd expect in such place. Only because of the food, we would come again. But raising the service level to the quality level of the kitchen would really make this place a top spot in the area.

We've been traveling to Germany to visit my husband's family every year for the last ten years. But it's only last summer that I'm told my father-in-law has a favorite fish restaurant. (This is partly my fault, as I'm not progressing as quickly with my German lessons as I should, and depend heavily on my husband's translations.)My father-in-law is a particular eater, and does not much enjoy restaurants. I was madly curious to experience his favorite restaurant. As my husband is not overly fond of fish, this took some bargaining, but it was well worth the trade-off's. (Who needs to go to yet another Michelan star restaurant?)The restaurant was a joy to my husband and I. We, and our in-laws, are all home gardener's. So on the path to the restaurant from the back-side parking lot, we dallied in their extensive kitchen gardeners, comparing the progress of their herbs with those in my in-laws garden, and mentally noting which herbs we'd want in our order. Then came the fish ponds. The fish, raised in a series of pleasant, fresh ponds were a pleasure to the eye. And a joy to any one interested in controlling their food sources. With all the pollution issues facing fish populations these days, it was a pleasure to see a fish farm in production. The ponds were well-maintained, and you can't get fresher fish than when they're catching it to order. After meandering through the garden, and walking along the fish ponds, we finally made it to the restaurant itself. (NOTE: We purposely parked on the back side. There's a parking lot on the front side that leads directly to the restaurant entrance.) If you enter from the front, the entry path is lined with small statuary and other crafts. The menu is primarily fish. (Fish is their passion.) We each ordered different entree's, and everyone loved what they'd ordered. The restaurant is a place where you will want to linger in good weather. We were there on a summer day. We had reserved a table over looking the ponds. We overate (who could blame us) and lingered over our iced tea and cold wine, watching the children play on the slides and swings. Reservations are recommended.

This place may be good. What is for sure is that they open or stay closed when they feel like it. When we first checked it out, on a lunchtime, it was closed. A schedule of sorts was available on a card, which informed us that it would be open on Wed and Thurs evening but not Friday or Sat. Which seemed odd but we resolved to try it on Thursday. Around 4.00 tried calling them to reserve. No answer. Website? No website. What to do? Too far to walk, had to drive down there to make a reservation. Got there and the card was gone to be replaced by a message in the blackboard that the restaurant would next be open the following Tuesday. A man was busy loading fish into a black Land Rover. He might have been the owner, but he looked right through me without saying a word. So I thought, sod him too. Wasted an hour and a euro on parking for that. So it might be good. Just don't go there unless you have 100% evidence that they are open and willing to give you a table.

We spent a couple of days in Warnemunde. Found this place on trip advisor and made a reservation. They started us off with a nice gazpacho. We had the fish with butter sauce, the fish with ham and the ox cheek. All were very good. The fish were done perfectly and the flavors complimented each other well. We finished with the raspberry sorbet in lime creme with chocolate crumble. That was outstanding.

We ate some bruschetta and pasta for lunch. Pasta was average and bruschettas were a bit disappointment - somehow the topping didn't taste fresh enough. The place itself looked quite smart out, but they really could bring the bill a bit faster after asking it, especially if the customer is with a small baby. It was also a bit hard to enter this place with baby carriage, since you have to enter the place via small stairs.

This review is long overdue - we dropped into the VIELMEER, located right on the marina in Ostseebad Kühlungsborn with great sea views from almost anywhere in this popular restaurant. We sat on the outside deck and enjoyed our meal as well as the view of the Baltic sea. An English menu is available if you ask - service was excellent as was our meal. Recommend!Dear denver60,thank you very much for sharing your opinion with us. We are so glad to know that our gastronomic proposal has been to your liking. We hope to welcome you back soon to surprise you with the rest of our menu. Kind regards from KuehlungbornToni Weide
