Speaker Connolly

During our Ireland vacation, we have been eating at local pubs all throughout the country, and loving it! Tonight, traffic prevented us from getting to our desired pub, so we pulled off in the Firhouse area and found Speaker Connolly which had decent ratings. So we decided to give it a try. Most pubs we’ve been visiting have obviously been popular with travelers, but this spot appears to uniquely “local”. It was obviously filled with many local patrons, most of which went from table to table to talk with their friends (and share a brew or story). We had such a fun and relaxing time here as we witnessed true Irish Friday Night pub night! For dinner, we shared a Fish n Chips meal, which was outstanding! We’ve found that we like the “wedges” better than the regular “chips”, as they have some seasoning. Great meal, , nice brews, topped off with a nice dessert. We left feeling blessed to have stopped here. Don’t get your hope up for great ambiance here - just look for local pleasures. And by the way, an earlier reviewer complained about the bathrooms. I can happily report that, in April 2019, all is well! All the bathrooms are in tip-top shape!

The Grasshopper Inn is located in the middle of Clonee Village and a favourite watering hole and refuelling point (i.e. pub grub). We visited coming up to the Christmas holiday period and enjoyed roast duck with crispy potatoes and gravy, stuffed with festive spices and oranges in the stuffing, which made a great change to turkey – memorable. In addition to the excellent Carvery, there is also Bar food. This is an institution in Clonee, which celebrated 21 years recently - the restaurant has grown a lot and aims to use local produce. There is live music on weekends but we prefer a quiet pint of Guinness and a chat, in the large Beer Garden and then dining in the patio area. We thought prices were good value and we are hoping to return next year.

I ate here this week with two friends, we have had dinner here on a few occasions and it is always delicious. The portions are huge so be aware of that, some of the dishes you could share between two people but if you cant eat it all the will give you a doggy bag. There is a good selection on the menu for every type of person from a meat eater, to a veggie or a vegan. Staff are very mannerly and friendly, the pub itself can get very busy and I believe on a Sunday you would be lucky to get a table but we always go during the week. Love this place so will go back again.
