The Duke of Marlborough Tavern

The Duke of Marlborough is a 5 Star restaurant with 5 Star service. This is the place to go for fine dining and exceptional service. All of the staff are professional waiters and know what they are doing. The kitchen was well staffed and the food was exceptional too. I enjoyed my dining experience, forgot to take photos ... but well worth a visit. I will be going back and remember to take a photo!

Three of us ordered different dishes for lunch including the seafood chowder, the Huevo Rancheros, and the Fish & Chips. We were delighted with each dish. The seafood chowder had whole mussels and big chunks of fish and was delicious. Our vegetarian loved the Huevo Rancheros egg dish; the Fish & Chips were superb. Dessert was a homemade fruit tart that we shared and wished we had each gotten one. This was one of the busiest restaurants for a good reason - great service, great food and a great all around experience at a reasonable price.

The food was excellent and so was the ambience. It has an elegant indoor dining room and also has outdoor seating. There are views of the harbor from both. We had the tasty very fresh flounder [$37] which is a large whole fish served with bok choy and pomegranate seeds. We also got the fish of the day [$39] which comes with roast potatoes, carrots and courgettes and a sauce. I recommend the roasted vegetables [$9.50] which were delicious. The rocket salad [$9.50] was okay.It claims to be the oldest New Zealand licensed restaurant.

We decided to eat here as we were attending a hypnotists show, the food is definitely better than our last visit but they ran out of vegetables and the salad bar was very uninspiring, 2 lots a lettuce and a potato salad, not very good , used to have beetroot, egg salad and pasta as well, the veggies were good when replenished but they need to keep them stocked up and hot , the owner is obviously making a huge effort and we will give it another go but on a less busy nightThank you for your feedback, it's reviews like this that allow us to improve. You're right that we're making a huge effort, we have changed the structure of the kitchen and recently updated the menu a little - but don't worry, all of the favourites are still available! On that night it was quite busy and you're right, we did run low particularly with the hot veggie bar - multiple times. We have looked at the issue with replenishing items and have changed the person responsible for keeping the kitchen up to date as to what is needed, so far it is working out well. In regards to the variety of the salad bar we're making efforts to bring different things back such as beetroot and increase the sauce/dressing options - currently we have a balsamic vinaigrette and wholegrain mustard dressing made in house along with our regular sauces, we're also making more prepared salads like egg & potato, pasta and coleslaw. Items do change daily depending on availability so it is possible on a busy weekend we may run out of a popular item but we're doing our best to have a little extra on-hand - particularly items that can last a little longer in the fridge or dry store. I'm sure next time you visit these issues will be a thing of the past. Thank you again for your helpful feedback, it has helped us make Legends Restaurant a better dining option and I look forward to seeing you next time.

The Village Cafe

Reviews rated this cafe quite highly but to be fair we called in as its close to a great bookstore. Good coffee. Small but varied menu (on board inside) but no kid’s menu which was a minus. Good food (although the mushrooms on ciabatta were a bit overloaded with sauce). Around 20 mins wait for food which was fine but we’d finished our coffee well before the meal arrived. Rated as child friendly but didn’t get that vibe. No play area.

We enjoyed our wine tasting before our meal. The wines were all very nice. The menu had excellent choice and the snapper was wonderful but the tuna with pickled vegetables the best I have ever had. The service was excellent and while the prices for food were top end they were worth it. We couldn’t fault our lunch and are glad we visited.

Ake Ake means forever forever that is my stance about this outstanding restaurant. For 7 years I've never been disappointed. This is the sort of place that's hard to find these days. It's the reason you dine out. Outstanding service, individual attention, prompt delivery, excellent local wines. Relax by the fire in winter, sit outside on warm summer days. Recommend Fillet steak from heaven good selection of vegetables. The apple and rhubarb tart a perfect dessert. Can't wait till next time.

We popped in just before closing and were unable to sample the food (shame because the hot-from the-oven pizzas looked good). It's a well run place that offers a nice venue with stunning views in which to taste the wine.
