I really love inexpensive, no-frills, but authentic Mexican restaurants like Mi Cocina (My Kitchen). Stepping inside out of the pouring rain after watching the Boston Marathon a few feet away all morning, I was more than ready to dry off, warm up, and enjoy some comfort food.Mi Cocina has only been open a week or so, but they're definitely starting things off right. Decor is minimal - a few sombreros and other Mexican memorabilia mounted on the walls, a Spanish language telenovela was playing on the flat screen TV above the door, but the dozen or so tables were all occupied at lunchtime with mostly Spanish-speaking families, couples, and a few solo diners like me. My waitress was fluent in English, however, and cheerily took my order. I knew they had pupusas, the thick, corn tortilla cakes with fillings that are one of my favorite Latino dishes, a Salvadoran specialty but increasingly found on the menu at Mexican restaurants. I ordered three (at a mere $1.75 each) - two with loroco, a South American flower bud that tastes similar to capers, and cheese, and one with cheese and beans. While I was waiting (they are clearly cooked to order) the waitress brought me some corn chips and fresh salsa, along with the glass of mango juice ($2) I had ordered.The pupusas, fresh off the grill with nice char marks, were delectable, rich with melted cheese and the other fillings. They came with a side of tangy, vinegar-laced cole slaw. Pupusas can also be ordered with a pork filling, and the rest of the menu has many of the usual suspects - tacos, quesadillas, burritos, as well as appetizers, soups, and breakfast items that are served all day, like huevos rancheros. One of the tip-offs that the place is the real deal, appealing to the palates of local immigrants from Mexico and Central America, is the inclusion of meat choices like tripe and tongue. Mi Cocina has no liquor license, at least yet.When I was completely sated by the generous portions of simple but fresh and home-made tasting food and the bill came, even with a generous tip the total was less than $10. In more ways than one, Mi Cocina is definitely the anti-chain Mexican restaurant experience.

My husband and I stopped in here late Saturday afternoon. To start out we got free chips and salsa which were excellent. The chips were warm as if they came right out of the oven. We each ordered a combo meal so we were able to try their enchiladas, tacos and rice and beans. All were excellent. The portions were good size and our waitress was quick. It was a great stop!

I work nearby and will only order lunch from them from now on. Prices are cheap and the food is awesome! My favorites are the taco chicken salad and the chicken fajitas burrito. I'll be coming back for dinner and drinks. Love the casual atmosphere. Highly recommend!

This is a small spot that has very good Mexican fare. The staff is very attentive and friendly... sort of homey. Prices are fair and the Margaritas are well made. Early on a Saturday night walked in, place packed, so ate at the bar. Our standby, the shrimp with lime... one of the best dishes. Also, a chicken quesadilla. Flan to finish.... all perfect. Excellent chips/salsas served gratis.Very enjoyable.

When first opened it seemed quite popular. We went there for the first time and wont be back, kind of gross. Average bar service, slow delivery of our meals, food unremarkable, kind of grungy feeling. I have not seen much activity there in a long time, I can see why. Mexico City Taqueria is a much better and safer choice.

Had dinner on a Sunday evening. Atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable. Good menu selection. Service was disappointing throughout the meal. The server was inattentive; brought dishes with the ingredient we emphasized should be left out. She couldn't tell us what salad dressings they had, and just threw packets on the table (not what we asked for). Food was mixed - some prepared well, some dishes seemed tossed together. This was a real change from times past, when the food and service was consistently very good. I am hoping it was just an 'off' day.
