Chiloa Gourments

The online reviews for the restaurant were intriguing so we sought it out. It's hidden away in a narrow laneway in central Bayonne, on first approach we walked straight past it, and had to backtrack to find it. The restaurant is small with a cosy, homely quality. It's fair to say that keeping up with what is in vogue is not a priority here. Running the show was a diminutive elderly woman, who bustled around the room (and into the tiny kitchen) with great purpose and energy. She spoke Basque and French and no English, and our language strengths were the exact opposite so communication was a challenge, but it also became a lot of fun. Our main tool of reference was a review of the restaurant from an English newspaper and now in a picture frame that she presented to us with a bit of fanfare. The review and our hostess both made clear that options were limited - in fact there was to be no choice at all. We started with soup, main course was a veal ragout and dessert black cherry pie under masses of cream. The food was simple, delicious, and servings were enormous - washed down with sangria, red wine and then a local apple-based liqueur, which was on the house. For some time we thought the bustling hostess was all things, both maitre de and cook, and it must be said service was fearfully slow. The place was soon full and I got the impression all were locals, or at least French. We were the only tourists. And I was amazed at how patient the diners were, to have their orders taken and then to be fed. No-one seemed to mind the wait. About halfway into the evening, our hostess's assistant, another older woman, arrived to help with serving the meals, although mine host remained firmly in charge in the kitchen and in settling accounts when the diners took their leave. For us, it was a unique experience.

We happened upon Janine while exploring Bayonne and I think we nailed it. We have 3 young kids so sometimes it can be a little challenging, but we all managed just fine. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The kitchen is open all day. I ate a plate of rice pasta risotto with pork belly and a parmesan foam. Nothing fancy but amazing good. The pasta rice risotto was cooked to the perfect consistency and the pork belly was perfectly cooked and delicious. Thank you for this dish, it was memorable. My wife and the kids had burgers and chips. Best burger in South West France so far, chips perfect. It is a pleasure eating in a restaurant like this where people care about what they are serving to the customer.

I discovered this place and knew we had to stop, as my husband is a cheese fiend. The whole menu here is centred around cheese, and many of them are sheep or goat's cheeses, so even the lactose-intolerant can enjoy! I estimate more than two thirds of the menu appeared to be vegetarian. For starters I had a plancha containing three sheep's cheeses and one goat's cheese, supplied with four accompanying pots of chutneys chosen to supplement each cheese perfectly. And bread, obviously. Hubby had an oeufs cocotte. For main courses hubby had tartines and I had a huge goats cheese and fig salad which was divine beyond belief. A couple of glasses of red and the total came to 52 euros. The waiter/owner was really informative about each dish, enthusing about all of his ingredients, really selling every product. The whole place was an absolute delight - this place deserves to be full every day of the year. Absolutely brilliant.

I usually reserve five stars for the supreme of supreme, but this was such a delicious dinner with great ambience that it’s getting all five. We had the tuna appetizer, with modifications for the gluten-free person. This was joy for the g-f because there were no problems with adaptations and most of the menu was available. Hooray! Portions are pretty large and because our French is not perfect and we had the gluten-free issue to make clear, we got the wife (I think) who was perfectly charming and welcoming, as were all the wait staff. For mains, my husband got the duck and I had the pork. Both were excellent. The menu is a good bargain; it includes dessert or cheese course, an entree and a plat. Still a lot of food!

If you are lucky enough to get a seat at this neighborhood restaurant right across from the fish market, you'll not regret it. The simple menu always includes a fish of the day -- chiperons stuffed with pigs' feet on the day I went - along with a few other home-cooked options. I chose a Basque classic, tender lomo pork loin, topped with succulent sausage (at 10 Euros). I finished my meal with a tasty, light original apple tarte.

Went here with two friends because the reviews were so good.Including us, there were about 20 diners and only one person serving so service was slow.Only a choice of two starters, two mains and two desserts.Food was very good (only redeeming feature, hence the "Average" rating) but portions were small. We ordered dessert because we were still a little hungry (a first in a Mexican restaurant for me).

Excellent burger, pasta and goats cheese salad. Very reasonable price too. Didn't have any wine but the wine list looked to have an excellent selection all by the glass also very reasonably priced. Friendly and attentive service. Best restaurant in Bayonne? I'm not sure but it was good simple food.

Unprepossessing from the outside, we had previously shied away from this little restaurant. But on the recommendation of our host, we ate there - and what a surprise! The first pleasant surprise was the friendliness of the staff, Next, the wine - a short but excellent wine list. But then, oh, the food! Later, as the place filled and they started turning people away we realised that the locals flock here, which is always a good sign. Idiosynchratically, the chef bustles in and out with his creations wearing an unusual hat, and I later learned that this hat is his signature. But if in the area, do yourself a favour and call in. You won't be disappointed, and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the bill.

I liked the look of this restaurant as we drove from the airport to our holiday village on the first day, I thought it looked rustic and had a charm that seemed to draw me towards it. This is the best restaurant the family and I ate in rustic and local a real treat. As the only English speaking people in this restaurant I felt we were going to be in for a treat and I wasn't disappointed, if it full of locals it's got to be good, well it's a policy I work with and it seems to work well. You may need a little bit of the French language to get by, but don't forsake a visit just for that reason alone. The lady serving is a charming French woman in her 50s/60s smiling and talking all the time, trying to help as best she can and using her broken English with my broken French was a great laugh to all in the restaurant. The food is homely and rustic, from meat plate salads, fish and my favourite (even if I was a little to far north) the cassoulet de Toulouse was stunning and huge. The daily specials and other main dishes looked equally as good. The desserts are all home made by the woman and are out of this world, the lemon pie ( lemon meringue pie) was simply to die for. The apple pie was top draw also. With a local wine list and some from farther a field you are spoilt for choice.Don't miss this please this is as French as it comes and is a real charmer as is the lovely woman.Tres Bon tres Bon
