This popular restaurant in a neighborhood rivaling some of the coastal areas for poshness is worth searching out. I find the less than thrilled reviews on Tripadvisor inexplicable. If smoke bothers you, get a reservation before 8 p.m. when the crowds start to show up. The farmhouse set in a garden is lovely as were the paintings and modernistic gas fireplace and the seating comfortable. The menu is pricey but the portions are generous and the fish, meat and pasta dishes are delicious. The regular diner who accompanied us here said he has never had a bad meal there, and never sat at a table with anyone who did. My salmon-stuffed ravioli were wonderful and I wanted to stab one of the grilled shrimp from my colleague's plate. The third at our table had a gorgeous steak. Salads were plentiful and fresh, peppered with nuts and fruit. I was too full to try the desserts though they all sounded lovely. I would tell friends to go here.

The location is just besides the Lac de tunis, nice view, good service, yet it lacked of authenticity. It was more of an international cuisine. We tired the bruschettas with cheese and with tapenade. The funniest thing was the salad: you know reminded me of the paella where many leftovers were gathered such as eggs, tuna, parmesan... Luckily the dorade with veggies was good and so was the desserts served in trays. Else nothing to mention.Â

The Lavazza coffee served at L'Entracte was a welcome discovery for New Zealanders craving a 'flat white'! This cafe has not long been open and appears to be a favourite hangout for the young and trendy who prefer the ambiance of the mezzanine floor. The large, modern glass frontage caught our attention from the street and the interior is European cafe scene. The open, working kitchen adds action and interest. You can give your compliments to the chef personally! The menu is a mix of Tunisian and Italian dishes. The menu photos and descriptions make ordering easy. Service is friendly and fast. I am fascinated by ancient palaces in the Medina that have been restored and re-purposed for new fine dining, but am also intrigued by restaurants from the modern era that have stood the test of time. So it is with Chez Nous, established in 1935. It is tough to survive in the restaurant business, so any place, anywhere in the world, that has operated continuously since 1935 gets a big gold star in my book. Having said that, I went with trepidation over concerns that Chez Nous might simply be resting on its laurels, but was pleasantly surprised that the food (and wine) was actually quite good! The place is a bit quirky and the staff is a bit enthusiastic, but it is well worth the visit. Rue de Marseille, or at least the pedestrian-only block of it off Avenue Bourguiba, has clearly seen better days. Just as clearly, those days were in 1935. If you close your eyes to the modern decay on this street, you can still feel like youâre in something of a belle époque. What makes this sensation more complete is Chez Nous itself, which is clearly the only restaurant still standing from those good ole days between the World Wars. When you enter, the noise of the street disappears, and this small, intimate, quiet restaurant envelopes you with its history and classic French cuisine.

We have wanted to try L'Astragale for some time at the recommendation of enthusiastic friends, including several experienced Tunis hands. We were disappointed. This is an old-school French restaurant where the goal appears to be making the customer feel inferior. This might have worked better if the dining room where we were seated didn't reek of mildew. Don't get me wrong, the food was very good. We sampled the St. Pierre, a wonderful fish dinner, chateaubriand and veal tongue, along with a chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream. Delicious, though the portions are small and the prices, while not exorbitant, are about double what you'll pay at restaurants I liked better in Tunis. Also, the name. What does it mean? We spent some time on the Internet and it's either Anklebone or Fortress.

After having arrived at the restaurant and having waited for 20 minutes in a little table inside the bar, they told us that they were "out of table" while they were still receiving bookings through phone calls. Unbelievable! They don't respect the order of arrival but prefer favouring staff's friends. Don't go there!
