We had already eaten lunch so we just wanted to go up, savor the views and enjoy a leisurely trek down as it is absolutely lovely.After a short 10 minute cable car ride up, we walked through the restaurant, ordered a couple of drinks and sat outside looking out at the mountains. The weather was perfect, not a cloud in the sky and it was a relatively warm day in the mountains (13 degrees C).Despite ordering 2 Kafi Fertigs, which is supposed to be coffee with schnapps and sugar, the clown behind the counter served us Punsch (Swiss style punch).We should have corrected him but weren't bothered and made our way out to relax in the sunshine outside.The walk down was lovely and is one we even do in winter. If you haven't been, I recommend it.

Knowing that the new Chäsrugg cable car station and the restaurant is a architectural landmark. It is indeed very attractive.BUT: great from the outside. Disappointing from inside. 1 great big long hall - looks like a big cafeteria. Thanx for the very attractive fire place in the center.SERVICE at a self service counter extremely slow. Nice tables outside - even at mid day in the shade.Overall disappointing.

The Gade is a unique and romantic restaurant in the middle of the skiing and sleigh ride slope in Unterwasser. If you're in the beautiful Toggenburg valley you shouldn't leave without visiting the Gade. It's equally popular with hikers, skiers, romantic couples, families and groups. The owners and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. They are eager to fulfill yours every wish and make you feel at home.That feeling is intensified when you dine in the cosy original wooden mountain style chalet room with the fire place and the two alcoves (see pictures). The atmosphere is just one of a kind. The food is mountain-style and impeccable at prices that you can only dream of in the city. If there's anything I could wish for it's a real good bottle of wine. All in all, I can only recommend this charming mountain gem.

Armins Hagbeizli ist eigentlich kein richtiges Restaurant, sondern ein Gelegenheitsbeizli mit wenigen, aber Währschaften Gerichten. Die Rösti, auch wenn "Fertigrösti" sind die Besten, die ich jemals ass. Mancher Gourmet- Tempel verwendet auch Rösti aus dem Beutel und bringt es nicht halb so gut hin wie Armin. Weitere einfache Gerichte wie zb. Bratwurst sind erhältlich. Armins Hagbeizli ist wunderschön gelegen zwischen Wildhaus und Gamplüt. Wunderschöne Aussicht auf die Churfirsten. Immer lustige aufgestellte Leute die einkehren. Der Wirt selber ist ein unkomplizierter humorvoller Typ der es mit allen gut kann. Ich habe das Hagbeizli im Trip Advisor eingetragen, weil es meiner Meinung nach ein Highlight ist in Wildhaus, das man unbedingt besuchen sollte.

We actually spent our New Year's eve at this restaurant.We opted for this place because it's the only one in Wildhaus that we were aware about that was offering it's normal à la carte menu along with a special 'Silvester' menu. Reason being is my other half, being Swiss of course, has extremely limited tastes and doesn't eat much other than chicken, potatoes, pasta and salad.In the end, my girl also opted for the menu because they were only offering a limited à la carte selection.Our menu consisted of 5 courses as well as an amuse bouche to start off with. Unfortunately everything was just average. 85 francs for a 5 course menu is extremely reasonable in this overpriced country, but the food reflected that. Nothing stood out apart from the amuse bouche!The seafood course reeked of sub standard fish and scallops and the beef tartar had practically no seasoning. The consommé was bland. They never asked us how we'd like our steak done for the main course and the meat itself was flavourless. Too many places in Switzerland do not hang their meat. An unaged steak is poor quality, period. Basic errors. Put together with the fact that they kept pushing us to rush our way through the meal, the entire experience was disappointing.The food might look good but it tasted average. Too much aromat and not enough care taken to bring out the best in taste of the food ingredients themselves. Will we return? Probably for a pizza but not for much else.

We had a visitor from out of town who wanted to visit the Alps, so after visiting Säntis, we stopped by Sonne for lunch.My favorite restaurant in Wildhaus is Alpstein but it predominantly has an Italian kitchen brigade and menu. As I wanted my guest to experience a Swiss German meal, we opted for Sonne.I ordered St. Galler Rösti for the both of us. It consists of a traditional Swiss German grated potato pancake (rösti, pronounced rushtee) fried in a lot of butter and served with a large veal sausage (bratwurst) and onion gravy, served in a cast iron skillet. I am not a fan of bratwursts because I find them tasteless, completely lacking in flavour and the filling is minced beyond recognition. It hardly tastes like meat and it's probably the reason why kids love them.Nevertheless, as I wanted my guest to experience it, I knew what I was getting... On the other hand, the rösti was very good, perfectly crisp, well seasoned and the onion gravy was decent.Service was good but nothing special. The restaurant and the town were completely empty so we were served without delays.

We only stopped by for a couple of drinks. It was cold out and it being only 16:00 we thought we'd get a few beers. The place is attractive enough in an old school chalet style. Apparently they have a lounge & bar as well but none of the elderly waitresses informed us. I only realized when I went to the loo. Nevertheless, the waitress was friendly yet aloof. They were busy setting up for dinner as Swiss eat as children do,at 6pm.I never ate here but my partner did. She & her mum had the daily menu. For a person like her who has absolutely no idea about food, she found her food bland and uninteresting. I am so happy with the Hotel Sonne restaurant 20 metres up the road that I don't want to risk a bad meal at Hirschen. I'm sure I will some day, just not yet...

A small garden restaurant in a popular village called Wildhaus near St Gallen. We were hungry, passed by this restaurant on our way home to Zürich and decided to stop.....best decision ever made! Since then we have been there three times for the best EVER pizza! So many to choose from, you can order a small one, the pizza base is thin, bubbly and crunchy in just the right places AND you are served with two small glass egg cups filled with chopped pepperoni I in oil as well as chopped garlic in oil.....dribble this on your pizza....take the first bite.....Friendly service, cute garden and being on the main street is no problem as the traffic is minimal. Parking across the road.....

Well, what can I say about this place...Despite it's slightly sheltered location (on the way to Gamplüt just passed the bend after the Hotel Sonne), we were informed by locals that this was THE restaurant in Wildhaus. To be honest, from the outside, it looked uninteresting but having eaten in all the other restaurants in Wildhaus, we decided to give it a go. Thank God we did.It was just before lunch time on December 31st and we hadn't reserved for NY's eve dinner yet. Upon walking into Alpstein at 11:30am, we were immediately served our order of coffees and croissants. When we asked about the evening's dinner, they said there was only a set menu on offer and only 1 table remaining. As my partner does not have an extensive palate, the set menu was deemed too exotic for her liking. We instead decided to have a nice leisurely long lunch rather than a festive dinner. Great decision.The menu is much better than what you would get in all the other restaurants in Wildhaus. There is no hint of fondue, rösti (too touristy in the mountains) or pizzas and sandwiches, their menu consists of excellent game meats hunted by the owner himself as well as exceptional Italian dishes (meats, rissottos, pastas, etc...). The head chef and his assistant are Italian and their food is the real deal.We were served by Erika and she was outstanding. As a foreigner and a hotelier who has lived in Switzerland for many years, it comes as no surprise that I consider Swiss hospitality to be despicable. However, occassionally, you come across real genuine givers and Erika is one of them. She really was perfect. She was friendly yet gave us our privacy, informative, cheerful and pleasant. We started with an aperol spritz and a campari soda as aperitifs. Both were well made and served in contemporary glassware. Our starters were a mixed salad prepared by my partner from the self service salad buffet and a mixed vegetable soup for me. The salad was fresh and my soup was heavenly. No artificial flavourings or seasonings in my soup, just pure good quality ingredients in a delicious heart warming soup.For mains, my partner had a pan sautéed pork escalope bathed in a cream sauce served with noodles and veggies (rahm schnitzel). I tried her dish and it was excellent. The pork was tender, juicy and full of flavour. The veggies themselves were a gorgeous mix of fresh produce consisting of over 7 types of vegetables, not just the usual peas and carrots. My main course was Gams pfeffer. At first I was not aware of what Gams was in English and neither did Erika. Nevertheless, a few internet searches on my phone informed me that it was infact Chamois. Erika was also pleased to find out. As a carnivore who adores his game meat, I opted for it. It was really very delicious. Slightly gamey, slightly livery and meltingly tender in a very rich sauce (pfeffer) which is normally made with red wine and occassionally the animal's blood. Served with spätzle (flour dumplings) and a poached pear with home made berry relish, it was really outstanding. Along with the mains I enjoyed a very fine bottle of Amelia Nero D'Avola from Sicily and it went together like harmony. For desserts, we shared a poppy seed and apricot tart with home made vanilla ice cream. It was very very good. The tart was not too sweet, the poppy seeds adding a lovely nutty earthiness and the ice cream was heavenly vanilla, you could even see the vanilla flecks in the ice cream.As we are regulars in Wildhaus, this place has become and will be our favourite. Not only is the service outstanding, so is the food, the presentation, the quality and the menu in itself. Well done Alpstein, we will be back very soon. Thank you again Erika.

We only stopped by for a drink on a Sunday just before lunchtime. The place is nice with a chalet feel to it but the main restaurant is furnished in a more modern way, less wood, sparsely decorated and bright. The waiters are very well dressed, women in traditional Swiss dirndls and the men in waistcoats and ties. I took a look at their menu and their chef, who is mentioned all over the menu as well as in the introduction, seems to be well known and commands a 15 person kitchen brigade. Lots of repeaters seemed to be coming in for their weekly Sunday meals. The menu looked good and resembled all other Swiss mountain restaurants, albeit with higher prices. I am sure the food is good here as the restaurant seems to be the main attraction here.Next time round, we will dine here. I wonder if it can beat my beloved Alpstein in Wildhaus, my favorite restaurant in this town.
