Zur Alten Abtei

This is a lovely typically German style decorated restaurant. It had heavy wood paneling and lots of ceramic vases sat on shelves high on the wall. The friendly servers were all female and wore traditional dirndls. The food was a little pricy (but not by too much) and they had several daily specials that included a broth cup of soup. There were four of us and we all enjoyed our meals. The schnitzel “uberbäken” with cheese was particularly tasty. This is a great restaurant to bring friends to who are visiting Germany, particularly for the first time, as the atmosphere is so traditional.

I've eaten here several times in connection with work and it never fails. The rinderfilet pheffersteak (no. 26) as well as the schweinhaxe is very good. Quick and friendly service + menues available in both german and english. It's also possisble to have semi-large gatherings in the restaurant (15 ppl or so).

I went there in April 2015 with a bunch of colleagues and had a pasta dish (Penne Diavolo) which was okay. It consisted of chicken and brocolli + some spicy tomato sauce. The taste in general was okay, but the brocolli was completely boiled out and the sauce was definately not freshly made - which was obvious from the consistency of all ingredients. But service was quick, the food cheap and the beer cold - as you'd might expect from a restaurant in this end of the scale.

This restaurant has a lovely outdoor siting area overlooking the square, which is now a roundabout and the main church. Despite being very busy on a sunny early summer evening the service was adequate and the food quite good. Had a problem ordering some wine, so opted for an excellent Bitburger.

We ate at this restaurant three times on a recent trip to the area. Menu was selection was great and food was fantastic. We had the fortunate experience of eating on a Friday night when they had a buffet. This was excellent with a good meat selection. This restaurant very much suits anyone who likes fairly typical German food/meat.My only criticism was the excessive number of flies in the dining area. The owner said this only happened in August due to the rural setting of the restaurant and that the kitchen was clean. Truth be told it was slightly unsettling and a restaurant delivering very highly in every other area so highly should address this - it's not that difficult to do.Thank you very much for your Review and your feedback. We appreciate it! Unfortunately in this area we have a lot of flies. It comes from the farmers around Bleialf and around the Restaurant. We did a lot and we work together with a pest control but there is only one effective solution. Poisson! We decided not to do it because we believe not only in healthy food; we also believe in an healthy environment. We have a lot of families with small children so in our opinion Poisson would be the wrong step to do. We also tried door and Window protection (which we have in the kitchen), but due to the busy terrace it is not effective at all.We are very strict and proud with our standarts of hygiene. Every guest who wants to convince them self is invited to take a look inside our kitchen!Hope to see you here again!Kind regards, Ulrich Beuchelt
