Alte Zunft

It was a sunny October-day, so felt like having our lunch somewhere with outdoor-tables in the sun and in the old part of the town. Almost the only place, where this was possible, was the 'Alte Zunft' (Old Guild). The chairs and tables were of a simple, functional wood-and-metal construction, all in front of a typical old-town-building.We hat just arrived from a pleasant 3-hours walk along the left, Swiss side of the Rhine and ordered the 'Zanderknusperli', which means 'pan-fried pieces of pike-perch', and they were served with a salad consisting of lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, red beet and green peppers with a French Dressing on top. What we didn't like was the Tartare Sauce for the fish on top of half a lemon, which could only be used after quite a mess.We had just arrived in time, since soon after all tables were occupied. Probably it is the location, which attracts the people. Going to the bathroom I saw that there are more tables inside on an upper floor, while downstairs the place functions mainly as a bar.I felt sorry for the waitress, who was friendly and brought everything fast, but she was alone to work the fully occupied outdoor-seating and the interior restaurant in the upper-floor. Considering this she did a great job.

We arrived in Bad Säckingen looking for a place for lunch and were brought here by an enthusiastic local that we approached randomly on the street. There were two problems with our order (one of the pizzas we ordered normally came with an egg, we asked for it "ohne Ei" - es lag nicht an der Sprache - but it came with the egg. Also, besides wine, soft-drink and mineral water I asked clearly for a glass of tap water but they brought a small bottle of opened mineral water trucked in from Italy. We arrived just before their lunch closing so perhaps they focussed on their break (although it was also hard to get the bill). The food, however, was excellent. Two HUGE and delicious pizzas and a lovely seafood pasta very well prepared.

We needed to wait for the food for about 1 hour. There were many guests, but only 2 employees. Service was not good. We weren't asked for drinks, but needed to wait like 20 minutes for the first order. Empty plates from starters were not removed. As well main dishes plates stayed with us for very long. The food quality is medium only with no creativity. Prices are rather high for Germany.I would not go there again.

The restaurant is in one of the best spots of the Münsterplatz or town square, right in front of the church.Since there is no through traffic, it's very quiet and if the weather permitting, there is plenty of outdoor seating. The menu has lots of German and local food, don't forget to check the daily and seasonal special. It can get very busy, sometimes the service becomes a little bit slow. They serve Lasser beer, a local beer from the region. It's worth to stop by, even just for a drink to watch the activities on the town square.

Steak House

Reviewed By Esty666

Now this is one really and truly excellent steakhouse! Located on the lovely historic, cobbled market square around the beautiful church, the Marco Polo is - contrary to what the name might imply - a steakhouse first and foremost. The menu is very extensive, and its two main specializes, each prepared on many varieties - are on the square prime US beef and Canadian buffalo. Steaks can be chosen in different sizes (in ounces). The main entrees all include trips to the well stocked salad bar and come with a side you can choose - and it is all excellent. You can also have smaller dishes with turkey, chicken or European beef. I just love their side of potato wedges; they're to die for. Service is prompt and very friendly, and the atmosphere is bright and cheerful. The food is a bit more expensive than average for the area - well, mostly the US Beef and the Canadian Buffalo - but if you are a steak aficionado, this is very much worth it indeed. I can most highly recommend this place for anybody who craves a decent steak with all the trappings; it's just like at home!

I first reviewed this restaurant 18 months ago, so I was pleased to revisit on our return to Bad Säckingen. We visited first on a Monday evening, again for a meat feast here you can't go wrong, brilliant. The person writing the previous review to this one said the service was slow, well one this night for us it was like lightning! In fact when we returned the following night, for fish this time, we had to ask for a break between courses!Quality - no question about it, excellent.

We went here for a business dinner on a normal working day and found the place deserted. The menu was short (always a good sign) and featured mainly the food of the season (asparagus in this case) in all kinds of different combinations. The food was absolutely delicious, including the surprising ice-cream on offer for dessert (I had cucumber-goat cheese), which may admittedly not be to everybody's taste, but which give you a feel for the skills and creativity of the chef. Highly recommended!

Genuss-Apotheke

Our second lunch here, but certainly not our last! First impressions of this restaurant do not prepare you for what you are about to experience inside. Tucked away in a side street of this pretty little town, with a wide window front, it looks more like a shop than a restaurant, and indeed the building used to be a pharmacy. Inside, the decor is quite spartan, but your attention is immediately drawn to the centre of operations, the long open kitchen separated from the dining area by a waist-high bar (the old pharmacy counter, no doubt). We started with two glasses of an excellent Sekt, and chose the gourmet menu (4 courses for me, 3 for my wife). First up was the foie gras, and this was one of the best I have ever tasted. The foie gras was marbled with chocolate - it worked superbly - and accompanied by a collection of wonderful little taste bombs including pistachio cream and beetroot marshmallows. My soup, Jerusalem artichoke with quail egg and truffles, was the only slight disappointment, as it hovered uncertainly on the border between subtly flavoured and bland, but all was forgiven when the main dish arrived - superlative venison with all the trimmings. Dessert, also excellent, was a well-matched selection of little gems. We drank house wines. Both of them were perfect matches for the food - a local chasselas / sauvignon blanc white and a Spanish cabernet franc red. A special word here for the waiter / sommelier, Axel Stratmann, whose attentiveness and knowledge contributed immeasurably to our dining experience. The restaurant was full, but the chef, Raimer Pilz, was calm and totally in charge and always had a smile for his guests as he worked behind the bar. The intervals between courses were a little uneven, as there was one large group that needed serving simultaneously. Euro 185 for two. I'm returning next week!
