Alma-Ata was the host city for a 1978 international conference on Primary Health Care where the Alma Ata Declaration was adopted, marking a paradigm shift in global public health. In 1997, the government relocated the capital to Astana in the north of the country, which is about 12 hours away by train.

A personal favourite. Cheerful, friendly service makes up for limited English. The menu comes in English, so start with that. Not sure about the home made vodka, but worth trying out of curiosity. Not haute cuisine, but good basic Russian food. Recommend the pelmeni and the mushroom and potato vareniki.

Almaty is not really your foodie city, that is why I was pleased that I found this restaurant. We came as a big company of 10, were quickly seated and served. The restaurant has a broad spectrum of foods of different countries. There are oyetsrers, Thai, American and Medirrenean dishes in the menu. We ordered lots of starters and mains. None of starters disappointed, everything was fresh and well cooked. The mains were a mixed picture. The meats were good, but I was disappointed with my Kiev chicken. The staff were great, both the waiting staff and both sommeliers. Great choice of wines, less so of beer. Definitely , I wil visit when I am back to Almaty.

We went here after very bad service at another restaurant and thankfully we received excellent service and very good food. The prices are very reasonable. Our whole table of 12 received all our meals together and everyone on the table enjoyed the food. Weâve been here 3 times and had potato soup (excellent), broccoli soup (good), pasta with chicken and bacon (excellent) and pasta with mushrooms and spinach (good). They have a big menu, offering anything from pasta, burger, pizza, salads and meat to traditional dishes. Helpful are the pictures of the dishes in the menu, since there were no English menus. Prices are very affordable (soup between 700-800 Tenge, burger 1600 Tenge, pasta dishes start at 1300 Tenge). There is a 10% service charge and 50 Tenge charge for containers if you order take away. We were in Chechil Pub on Friday night. Naturally, it was crowded. So, it's better to book beforehand. When passing by you can't imagine that there are 3 stores with dance floor and live music inside this old building, and terrace for smoking. We found service, drinks and food very good. Shashlik is great as well as draft beer. Reasonable prices; quick service; clean facilities; almost in city center. Will add the place to my list to meet friends.

I visited Chechil pub several times during this year. It is a chain of pubs located in different parts of Almaty. Crowd is mainly local and if you want to go local, definitely visit this place which you can easily find using search on Internet or maps. It is safe for foreigners and any tourist, food and drinks are very good and not expensive at all, live band performs various songs (not loud!) and they have always people dancing there. They have discount for beer on Tuesdays, different discounts for drink sets which you can choose from their menu. I recommend a seafood plate for beer and/or fried prawns. Service is very fast, atmosphere is very friendly, reasonable prices what can be better? Pub is also good for team buildings, celebrations and any kind of gatherings again for good prices and pleasant atmosphere. One of the best pubs in Almaty.dancing

I have lived in Almaty now for 8 mths. We eat here several times a month but will not be back. It only takes one very bad service resulting in us leaving before we even received our meals for us to not want to eat here again. We came here on Friday the 23rd of August We arrived around 6.45pm. We did not have a reservation but the high tables were empty and we were happy to sit there. There was no one else there. After about 10 min another couple came in then 10min later single person sat down as well. Eventually our waitress took our order. We waited 50 min for our started to arrive. In the mean time the other two groups had starters and their main meal served. After waiting 1 hour and 15 minutes we had had enough. And to top it off two people who had joined the high tables 45 min after we arrived received their main meals. We asked for the bill and another female staff member apologized and said it was a mix up in the kitchen. We had asked our waitress many times what was happening and she told us it was because we had a starter, so did the others sitting at our tables. We were the only foreigners sitting at these tables. The rest were all local. There are too many restaurants in Almaty to have to deal with terrible service. Good afternoon! Thanks for your feedback. my partner is a vegatarian and we have been finding it hard for him to get food. here they have a little bit more of a choice. we was served by Zhibek who was lovely smiley and could speak quite good English. we enjoyed our food and beer would definitely recommend. we are staying for 2 weeks so will be going back.Good evening :) thanks for the feedback!
