Every argument over the best coney island hotdog in metro Detroit always includes American, Lafayette, and usually Duley's. Another one that always seems to come up is Red Hots. I grew up in Detroit and lived in the metro area for 42 years before moving to North Carolina 16 years ago. I had never even heard of Red Hots, but I kept seeing it mentioned in the same way as the others that I really like, so I made a mental note to stop in on my next Detroit visit. Today was the day. I went in at lunch time and ordered two coneys, fries and a coke. I'll tell you right now that these coneys are the equal to anything in Metro Detroit, including the classic places I already mentioned. And for me, that's not even the best part. The best part is the history and character of this restaurant. First opened in 1921, it sat about a block away from Henry Ford's Model T plant, guaranteeing a thriving lunch business. The restaurant has been run by the same family since day 1.The owners are talkative and friendly, and they seem to know most of their customers on a first name basis. The place is clean, and oozes character. If you aren't familiar with this area, be forewarned. Highland Park is an old, poor suburb, surrounded entirely by the city of Detroit. I like places like this. I grew up in Detroit and feel comfortable exploring areas like this. I'm always aware of my surroundings, but in this case I never felt remotely unsafe. If you are the type of person who would never go downtown, even in the daytime, you may want to eat someplace else. As for me, I'll be back, and next time I'll bring my wife along.

...it's more than all right, it's excellent. I visited my brother in Detroit last week and we came to the Dime Store twice for breakfast. The first day I had the Spicy Belly Benny, pork belly on a biscuit topped w/two eggs and hollandaise sauce. I loved it. The second time I had the Duck Bop Hash, duck over home fries topped w/two eggs. It was maybe bit salty for me, but still delicious. Their regular omelettes also looked good, but their Bennys and Hash dishes were great. Nice environment, good service, fair prices. I don't think you can beat this place for a quality breakfast.

Walking into this place, you feel like you stepped back in time, which is pretty cool. We came here to try their Coney dogs but unfortunately we didn't really appreciate them. Sausage casing was too hard in my opinion and the chili just makes it very soggy. Quite popular at lunchtime.

I'm so happy we found this place! We hit the sweet spot on a saturday morning with no wait time, but 10 minutes later there was a line out the door. Everything we ate was amazing. They have a few really unique items. The staff were all nice and helpful toward each other. It's very small so waiting could be an issue, I think it would be worth the wait.
