Find out what Canadian restaurants to try in St. John's. Looking out over the city of St. John's, you may be reminded of a mini San Francisco (minus the cable cars). St. John's provides the ideal balance between nature and nightlife, from the East Coast Trail and its stunning scenery to the colorful entertainment district along George Street. Although it's the largest city in Newfoundland, the vibe is still very small-town. You'll feel welcome in the City of Legends!

Having just arrived in St Johns and looking for some lunch, we chose this restaurant somewhat at random. Friendly staff greeted us and were happy to advise on the menu (being tourists some items needed explanation) and also to introduce us to the various Quidi Vidi local craft beers. There were both familiar favourites on the menu eg seafood chowder, as well as some interesting selections featuring local berries etc. There were light meals and larger meals. I think we entered looking for just one course but we were tempted to share a few items and then tempted by dessert and the first beer was so good, I needed to try another ...We left happy and very well fed and watered!

We chanced upon this little intimate restaurant. The homemade biscuits with molasses butter are to die for! The menu is very limited but creative. We ordered the pot roast and broccoli and they were out of pot roast so replaced it with a t-bone steak. When it was served, they were also out of broccoli. So better ask first before ordering this dish. We also had the fried chicken (very crispy) and spicy mac&cheese which was good.

Three St. John's natives advised us that this was "the" place for fish and chips downtown. It was! The fish was offered two ways and the portions were large. As an alternative, I had the turkey wrap, which was stuffed with lean white meat. The fries were some of the best I've ever eaten! They have a great selection of craft beers, of which I heartily recommend the Cappuccino Stout. The servers were friendly and attentive. But do note: it's not a huge place, and it does fill up quickly.

We arrived near closing time, but they happily accommodated us on a summer night. Nice table near the front window. Seafood all was excellent. Especially friendly service. It is a small and unpretentious place -- if this were my neighborhood (I'm from far away!) this would be a local go-to place.

We arrived at Oliver's by default (see Mallard Cottage misery) when our reservations at another restaurant disappeared in a puff of self righteousness. We called Oliver's as refugees and were welcomed as honored guests. It is not a large restaurant, but it has character and most importantly, people who really care that your dining experience is good. When I asked our waiter if he was Oliver, he responded "almost" and then allowed he was the owner. He had worked there for many years as a waiter/manager and as the chef. He had purchased the restaurant and was now the waiter/manager/ chef and owner - and it showed. This man was invested in his business. We were served our meals quickly - I had a bisque that was beyond good, and a filet in blue cheese and bacon cream sauce - just wow! My companions had the lamb flank (outstanding), sea scallops (huge and crispy on the outside - perfect) and the blackened Atlantic salmon - which she loved. As we ate and talked, the restaurant got more and more busy - there was a bit of dining noise but we felt it added to the relaxed atmosphere. Then came desert and the first stumble. I ordered the bread pudding which was excellent, but my companions all ordered the brownie with raspberry sauce - and they won't stop talking about it - raving, in fact. They just oooed and awwwed with each bite. My bread pudding was as good as it gets, but I felt a bit on the outside looking in. Ah well, it was just about perfect.I will say that as the restaurant got busy, the staff began to be a bit overwhelmed, but it was not something that in any way detracted from the evening and we could see they were working very hard - and the food was just that good - we were completely relaxed. If we lived in St. john's, I could see Oliver's would easily become our go-to restaurant for excellent, well prepared and generous foods. The owner and staff really care about their business and the whole experience was superb. I would recommend "Oliver's" without reservation. (There is a joke there - see Mallard Cottage misery)

Hungry Heart Cafe & Catering

Reviewed By O4597SFsteves

We had lunch at the hungry heart cafe this week after reading all the reviews. I was thinking hungry heart as in hearty meal. We were very disappointed, limited menu and my wife who is a picky eater ask if she could have jasmine rice and plain chicken breast which was in the kitchen but on two different plates they said nope. So she ordered French toast with ham but ask that mustard be on the side. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with minestrone soup. She got her French toast with mustard on the side but also with mustard in the sandwich they said nothing even after she brought it up. My breakfast sandwich was good but who put cabbage in minestrone soup? The coffee was good. Not a hearty meal in the filling you up sense. Don’t know how they got ranked so high. Live and learn. Thanks so much for taking the time to offer your feedback, not everyone does, and we find any critique is a great way to for us improve.
