Turangi is a small town on the west bank of the Tongariro River, 50 kilometres south-west of Taupo on the North Island Volcanic Plateau of New Zealand. It was built to accommodate the workers associated with the Tongariro hydro-electric power development project and their families. The town was designed to remain as a small servicing centre for the exotic forest plantations south of Lake Taupo and for tourists. It is well known for its trout fishing and calls itself "The trout fishing capital of the world". The major Māori hapu (tribe) of the Turangi area is Ngati Turangitukua.

We went here based on the Trip Advisor reviews. Off the beaten track in a peaceful suburban street. Small cafe attached to a fishing tackle shop. Nice range of baking and cabinet food. Can sit inside or out as we did on a beautiful spring day.

Turangi's Sunniest Café!Step in to a time zone and check out our Rockabilly 1950's theme and enjoy great coffee, excellent food and service with a smile. With a very extensive menu there is something for everyone here at our family friendly Café.
Don't be fooled by the fun decor and the number of people. We waited 45 minutes for our order after placing it with the brusque red-headed woman at the counter. When our meals finally appeared it was at best warm and worse barely tepid. We were all so hungry we didn't complain. Perhaps this is better as a stop to get a latte rather than a burger. Toasties (aka grilled cheese with various meats) seemed to be what came out of the kitchen quickly - without apparent priority given to those (like us) who ordered before others).

My visit a couple of days ago is proof that advertising works. I don't know who writes their advertising copy but the puns and in-house jokes about Pythagoras transferred into a mathematical theorem about pies made me wonder if the pies would live up to the quality of their radio advertisements. I need not have worried. They do, and what an amazing collection of pies they sell. Half of the challenge involved making up my mind which to have. I settled on the Steak & Mushroom pie and that was a brilliant choice. The pastry was excellent while the steak and mushroom filling was well balanced with just enough gravy to tip the balance from a 4 star to a 5 star review. I'm going to have to come back to this place. It would take a daily visit for about 3 weeks to eat one of all the pie options available. Keep up the good work everyone.
