George and Dragon

Whilst on a break in North Yorkshire we were lured from Upper Wharfedale, where we were staying, to a village just outside Richmond, by the promise of excellent food (according to trip advisor) in the North West Yorkshire pub of the year, the George and Dragon at Hudswell.Oh how we wished we hadn't.On arrival and ordering drinks, I asked if they had a white zinfandel rose, which is a sweet wine. The barman who was new was told by another, that the bottle that he had in his hand was a sweet rose.He did infact have two bottles each with about an inch of wine left in them which he poured into a glass and handed to me.It was not a sweet wine and of course tasted like vinegar, being only the dregs from the two bottles.I had already chosen from the menu back in Wharfedale, as a trip advisor entryhad stated that the Beef Brisket 'was to die for', well I would not give a fraction of a second of life for the dried up, tough lump of meat that was served to me.I had imagined a succulent piece of beef slowly braised in delicious gravy, not the hard to cut and difficult to chew offering that was served. My husband chose a pie which he declared to be very ordinary.I have vowed never to take notice of trip advisor posts on the quality of food in an establishment again! The pub itself does not have a lot going for it either, not very cosy and with a modern extension which is like an old fashioned boarding house. Not sure how this is the North West Yorkshire pub of the year, there are plenty of better pubs in the area, there is one just down the road at Downholme.

My wife and I visited the White Swan with some friends on a Saturday evening. It was very busy, but we were fortunate to get a table. The restaurant has a reputation for good steaks and the owner advised us on the various cuts available which helped with our choice. The two in our group who ordered steaks were not disappointed as they were exceptional and cooked to perfection. They also had a good selection of fresh fish and my king prawns were the best I have had in some time.Looking forward to our next visit.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Richmond which I've been coming to for some years. The decor is gorgeous (the loo positively twinkles) and it's all nicely set out. Perhaps I was unlucky - given some of the other recent reviews - but I found the service poor. I had to get up and go and ask to place the first drinks order. When the drinks came the waitress reached across - rather than walking round - to put the drinks down. We wanted to chat before ordering our food but we were really beginning to wonder if we'd been forgotten (and it wasn't busy) before our food order was asked for. Our side plates were removed - unused - as we hadn't been offered bread. And, having requested that I be allowed to keep mine it was useful to put my 'mug' of chips on later. The food was good (and piping hot) but my ribeye steak (beautifully medium rare) was almost certainly a sirloin. Again, food plates were put down by reaching across one person not walking around. Tables were promptly cleaned (vigorously with LOTS of squirts of cleaner), the staff were busy but you just didn't feel they were busy with the 'customers' so much as the procedures. It had the best service in Richmond (along with the best food) so it's a hard act to follow but it's the same price which is top end for Richmond and my overall impression last night was disappointment.Hi Sally, firstly I would like to say thank you for your review. The decor is what grabs a lot of our customers attention! I would like to apologise for the bread but we’ve stopped serving it now on an evening and I can only apologise there must have been confusion with the staff on this occasion. I’m pleased your steak was cooked beautifully and I can also assure you that steak is ribeye, we actually buy it very locally from the butchers opposite! As for the prices we put them down a couple of months ago but that’s not always noticeable when the menus are the same. Hope to see you back again in the future!

We were staying in Stow House about 6 minutes away and the proprietor there kindly recommended and booked us a table at The Wensleydale Heifer on our first night - it did not disappoint. We were seated in the bar area, which we had to ourselves for most of the night. Dogs are welcome and there were groups of people enjoying the ambient atmosphere in adjoining rooms. There is a wonderful balance of a relaxed and welcoming vibe with Michelin star quality. The serving staff are exceptionally polite and attentive. The highlight for us was the main meal...we highly recommend the slow roast beef, which we both ordered from the daily specials menu, we cleared our plates and savored every mouthful; it went perfectly with my glass of Malbec. The menu is extensive and you will find fish, steak and lobster feature heavily. There is a car park but it is a tight squeeze down the entrance/exit (between the hotel and another building) and I fear very wide or large vehicles would struggle to manoeuvre around it. There is also parking on the road. We would certainly visit again! Enjoy!Thank you so much for taking the time to post your lovely review.I am so pleased that you had a great time and enjoyed all aspects of your stay with us.I am delighted that you enjoyed some of our new seasonal dishes and I have passed your feedback onto the chefs. We all look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
